Army veteran, LTV Steel retiree

Stephen F. “Arky” Ondash Jr., 88, of Vestaburg, died Sunday, September 15, 2013, in Lasosky’s Personal Care Home, Clarksville.

He was born August 11, 1925, in Gates, a son of the late Stephen and Susan B. Chech Ondash.

Mr. Ondash was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in Northern France and the Rhineland. For his services, he was awarded the American Theater Defense Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

For 18 years, he was employed by J&L Steel Vesta 5 Mine as a mason. He later worked for and retired from LTV Steel’s South Side Works.

He was a 65 years member of Hanson-Cole American Legion Post 391 of Fredericktown, where he was named legionnaire for the years 2000 through 2008. He was very active with the post honor guard and was also a life member of Carmichaels Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491.

Mr. Ondash was also a lifelong member of St. Oliver Plunkett Parish in Fredericktown and was a former member of United Mine Workers of America and United Steel Workers of America.

He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan and enjoying hunting and fishing. He was a member of the V5 Camp in Endeavor.

Surviving are two brothers, John W. Ondash of Rochester and Edward F. Ondash (Diana) of Streetsboro, Ohio; a sister, Marjorie Campbell (Alfred) of Vestaburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, Joseph and Paul S. Ondash.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Greenlee Funeral Home, 42 Bank Street at Crawford Road, Fredericktown, where a blessing service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 18, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Michael Archangel Church, Fredericktown, with the Rev. Francis Frazer, as celebrant. Interment will follow in Fredericktown Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by Hanson-Cole American Legion Post 391, Fredericktown.
