Worked for U.S. Steel

Paul L. Caldwell of Charlotte, N.C., husband of Mary Jane Caldwell, died unexpectedly in his residence on September 13, 2013.

He was born December 3, 1939, in Monongahela, a son of the late Edward Charles and Elizabeth Edna Withrow Caldwell.

Mr. Caldwell graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1961. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves, where he was called into active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He worked at U.S. Steel for over 30 years.

In addition to his wife of 51 years, surviving are four children and eight grandchildren.

Visitation with the family will be from noon to 1 p.m., the time of service, Thursday, September 19, in Calvary Church Chapel in North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Church Car Ministry, 5801 Pineville-Matthews Road, Charlotte, NC 28226.

Served on Washington County Democratic Committee

Loretta L. “Pat” Crouse, 80, of Canton Township, formerly of Prosperity, died Monday, September 16, 2013, in Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township.

She was born November 16, 1932, in Flemington, W.Va., a daughter of Dennis and Ruth Caplinger Whitehair.

Mrs. Crouse had formerly been a cafeteria worker for McGuffey School District.

She served on the Washington County Democratic Committee representing Morris Township. She also was a member of Morris Township Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

Mrs. Crouse enjoyed doing crafts.

On March 28, 1954, she married William D. Crouse, who died Nov. 22, 1993. She and her late husband were active in Concord Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are three children, William D. Crouse Jr. of Washington, George Randy (Kathie) Crouse of Avella and Crystal (James) Culbertson of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Robert (Eleanor) Whitehair of Geneva, Ohio; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Culbertson, Todd and Shawn Kearns; five great-grandchildren, Shelby and Jeff Barnes, Jesse, Dillon and Bryant Kearns; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are an infant daughter, Tamara Crouse; and two sisters, Geneva Grace Whitehair and Buelah Thompson.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Hummell and Jones Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, Thomas W. Hummell, supervisor, Douglas M. Jones, funeral director, where a service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 20, with Pastor Russ Baird officiating. Burial will follow in Prosperity Cemetery. Avid woodworker and leather crafter

Harry Keith Lohr, 76, of Holland, Ohio, and formerly of New Freeport, died at 8:15 a.m. Friday in Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg, Ohio, after being in failing health for the past two years.

He was born September 11, 1937, in Westfield, a son of the late Cecil John and Ethel Louise Parry Loh. He resided in Wyoming prior to moving to Ohio in 1968.

Mr. Lohr was a 1955 graduate of the former Waynesburg High School.

He was a member of National Rifle Association and United Transportation Union.

Mr. Lohr was an avid woodworker and leather crafter who also enjoyed picture puzzles.

He was a peacetime veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served as a builder 3rd class with the Seabees.

Mr. Lohr was formerly employed in general construction and a laborer on the Alaskan pipeline and was last employed for approximately 32 years as an engineer with the Norfolk Southern Railroad.

Surviving are his wife, Gratta Joan Stewart Lohr, whom he married, February 17, 1962; a son, Brian Lohr of Walbridge, Ohio; and a daughter, Anita, wife of John McWatters of Delta, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Meghan, Patrick and Russell McWatters.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, is a brother, Harold Richard “Rick” “Flipper” Lohr.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend a public memorial service to be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, September 21, in Rush Funeral Home Inc. Rogersville, with the Rev. Vernon K. Berdine officiating. Loving family man was self-employed carpenter

Dale Lyle, 84, of Claysville, died Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at 5:11 a.m. in his home.

He was born January 2, 1929, in Taylorstown, a son of the late Clifford B. and Nina Stewart Lyle.

Mr. Lyle was a 1947 graduate of Trinity High School.

He was an elder and member of Taylorstown Christian Church for over 50 years. He most recently attended North Ten Mile Baptist Church.

Mr. Lyle was a self-employed carpenter/contractor. He also worked in the family business, C.B. Lyle & Sons, and was later self-employed as Lyle Contractors, until his retirement. He was a member of Washington Camp Gideons International, Masonic Lodge 447 of Claysville, where he was the Master of the Lodge in 1961, and a member of White Camp in Emporium.

He was a loving family man, enjoying his many years of marriage with his wife, and had many years of meaningful fun and happy times with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

On April 15, 1949, he married Jane S. Six Lyle, who survives.

Also surviving are his children; a son, Dennis (Nancy Litman) Lyle of Claysville; three daughters, Shirley (Michael) Sanders of Prosperity, Phyllis (Bob) Adkins of Taylorstown and Nancy (Alex) Moore of Washington; a brother, Charles (Deloris) Lyle of Taylorstown; seven grandchildren, Melody (Shawn) Phillips, Jonathan (Tricia) Sanders, Angela Sanders, Rebecca Adkins, Christopher (Brandy) Lyle, Melissa Clark and Darrin Lyle; 14 great-grandchildren, Nathan, Jacob, Aaron, Jordan, Karoline, Lucas, David, Caleb, Kaitlyn, Georgie, Andrew, Grayson, Jeremy and Austin; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Lyle was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Lyle, and a grandson, Benjamin Adkins.

UPS driver, exceptional baseball player

Dennis “The Doctor” Roskowski, 62, of Houston, died Tuesday, September 17, 2013, in Golden Living Center, Canonsburg, where he received compassionate care and support.

He was born May 22, 1951, in Canonsburg, a son of the late Zigmund and Lillian Whitfield Roskowski.

Mr. Roskowski was a 1969 graduate of Chartiers-Houston High School and received his associate’s degree in mechanical engineering from Penn State, McKeesport Campus, in 1971.

He worked for 27 years as a UPS driver, retiring in 2003.

Mr. Roskowski was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 in Canonsburg and American Legion Post 902 in Houston.

He was an exceptional baseball player, being scouted by the Montreal Expos in 1970. He enjoyed all Pittsburgh sports and was an avid golfer.

Mr. Roskowski loved music and had an extensive music collection.

He is survived by a loving companion of 24 years, Sandy Oliverio Phillips of Houston; four sisters, Barbara Lento of Houston, Cathy Perri (Anthony) of New Cumberland, W.Va., Betsy McCarthy of Houston and Peggy Unghajer (Tom) of Upper St. Clair; four stepchildren; nine stepgrandchildren, who called him “Pappy D”; and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at noon Sunday, September 29, in Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 in Canonsburg. Local physician

George F. Tibbens, M.D., of Washington, passed away September 16, 2013, in Donnell House, Washington.

He was born on October 19, 1921, in Washington, a son of Clyde E. Tibbens, M.D., and Nina Whitehill Tibbens, and raised in East Washington.

Dr. Tibbens was a 1940 East Washington High School graduate and attended Washington & Jefferson College, followed by basic training under the U.S. Army ASTP at Camp Grant, Ill. He then transferred to Jefferson Medical College and graduated in 1947. Internship was served at Bryn Mawr Hospital and he graduated from Graduate School of Medicine at University of Pennsylvania in Ophthalmology in 1949. After a two-year residency at Thomas Jefferson Hospital, he joined the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War. He was stationed in Japan for a year and then spent a year at Clark Air Force Base Hospital in the Phillipines.

He met Nancy Kostenbauder, a nurse from Hazleton, while a resident at Thomas Jefferson Hospital. They married in Hazleton June 5, 1952.

In 1953, Dr. Tibbens was discharged from the U.S. Air Force as a captain. He joined his father in the practice of medicine in 1954 in Washington. He was a member of the staff of Washington Hospital, American Medical Association, Washington County Medical Society and other medical organizations. Dr. Tibbens was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Washington.

At age 70, he retired from the practice of medicine and continued to reside in North Franklin Township. He was a member of American Legion Post 175, the Bradford House, a founding member of Pittsburgh Chapter of Trout Unlimited and a charter member of the Ruffed Grouse Society. His passions encompassed hunting, fishing, gardening, farming and woodworking.

Dr. Tibbens was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Nancy, and a sister, Martha Olshock.

Surviving are four children, Pamela (Robert) Bowser of Hudson, Ohio, William (Marti) Tibbens of Midlothian, Va., Susan Tibbens of Washington and Martha (Douglas) Miller of Mooresville, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Amanda (Rob) Ellinger of Charlotte, N.C., Andrew Bowser of Kent, Ohio, Abigail Bowser of Hudson, Hilary Tibbens of Midlothian, Emily Tibbens of Midlothian, Lee Miller of Columbia, S.C. and Marla Miller of Cornelius, N.C.; a niece; two nephews; a great-grandson, Aaron Jacob Ellinger, who was born September 17, 2013.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 27, in Piatt Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, where the Celebration of Life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, September 28, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Roger Fischer. Graveside interment following the service will be private. Elks and Arms Club member, Steelers fan

Pauline R. “Snooks” Blackhurst Trasoline, 84, of Houston, formerly of Washington, died Tuesday, September 17, 2013, in Donnell House, Washington.

She was born November 20, 1928, in Washington, a daughter of the late Robert and Mildred Wardle Dolan.

Mrs. Trasoline was a 1946 graduate of Trinity High School and worked for the receiving department of GeeBee’s Department Store, Washington.

She was a member of Avery Methodist Church in Washington.

Mrs. Trasoline was a member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 776, Washington, where she also was active in the auxiliary and enjoyed playing dartball. She was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and a member of Arms Club, Washington.

In 1947, she married John “Jack” Blackhurst, who died in 1984. In 1990, she married Fred Trasoline, who died in 2006.

Surviving are three sons, Randy (Polly) Blackhurst and Dave (Elaine) Blackhurst, both of Houston, and Rick Blackhurst of Washington; a stepdaughter, Roncie (Russ) Sprowls of Claysville; a sister, Marion Samuels of Washington; nine grandchildren, Christy (Tom) Sterling, Michelle (Jesse) Leichty, Scott Blackhurst, Shawn (Cyndy) Blackhurst, Brandon (Laurie) Blackhurst, Travis (Ashley) Blackhurst and Michael, Courtney and Kelly Blackhurst; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Deceased are a son, Kenny Blackhurst; and a brother, Fred Dolan.

Chemical engineer was ?active church member

Kenneth Ronald Werner, 77, of Canonsburg, died Monday, September 16, 2013, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.

He was born in Minot, N.D., a son of the late Elmer and Helen Dendinger Werner.

Mr. Werner was a member of Holy Rosary Parish and Knights of Columbus Holy Rosary Council, where he was financial secretary, and Fourth Degree Bishop Hugh C. Boyle Assembly. He enjoyed gardening, bowling, going to the Pops and shows in Pittsburgh. He liked to stay current on issues by reading and using his computer, and he was always helping organizations with his financial know-how.

He graduated from the University of North Dakota and worked as a chemical engineer on a nuclear submarine project for Westinghouse in West Mifflin.

Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Blasco Werner of Canonsburg; a son, Brian (Ann Marie Ryan) Werner of Okemos, Mich.; a daughter, Bonnie (Eric) Manz of Cecil; three grandchildren, Marilyn and Clair Werner and Madison Manz; and a brother, Edward (Deanna) Werner of Minot.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Coleman-Taylor Funeral Services, 3378 Millers Run Road (Rt. 50), Cecil, where prayers of transfer will be said at 9:20 a.m. Friday, September 20, followed by a Christian Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church, Muse, with Father George DeVille officiating.
