Attended Greene Arc

Karen Louise Adams, 73, of Jackson Township, Greene County, died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, September 19, 2013, in her home.

She was born June 20, 1940, the eldest daughter of the late Charles Francis “Quincy” and Mary Elizabeth Jacobs Adams, and resided in Greene County all of her life.

Miss Adams suffered from mental retardation from birth and formerly attended Waynesburg Opportunity Center (Greene Arc).

She attended Willow Grove Independent Baptist Church in Holbrook as long as her health permitted.

Miss Adams enjoyed time spent with her family, singing, “Lassie” dogs, orange cats and her backyard rope swing.

Surviving are three sisters, Kathy Reeves of Mesa, Ariz., Anita L., wife of Kenneth Simms of Waynesburg and Lucinda (Cindy) Kerr of Jackson Township, with whom she shared her home for the past 23 years, following the death of her mother; a foster brother, John K. Staggers of Waynesburg; a foster sister, Kay, wife of Glenn Adamson of Graysville; a brother-in-law, Thomas Ducoeur of Charleroi; six nieces; two nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, are two sisters, CoraSue Ducoeur and Linda Ann Adams; and a brother-in-law, Richard Kerr.

Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Rush Funeral Home Inc., Rogersville, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 23, with the Rev. Scott Blair III officiating. Interment will follow in Greene County Memorial Park, Morgan Township. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Greene County Humane Society, 183 Jefferson Road, Waynesburg, PA 15370. Seamstress enjoyed caring for animals

Mary Sarris Kotlinski, 71, of Washington, formerly of Canonsburg, died Thursday, September 19, 2013, in Greenery Special Care Center of Canonsburg.

She was born July 22, 1942, in Canonsburg, a daughter of the late Harry and Demetroula Kavourakis Sarris.

Mrs. Kotlinski was a member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church and graduated from Canon-McMillan High School in 1960.

She was employed by Sarris Candies for many years. She was previously employed in sales at Teeks Fine Shoes in Washington.

Mrs. Kotlinski also enjoyed being a seamstress and caring for animals.

Surviving are two daughters, Kristi Castanzo and husband Thomas of Harrisburg and Michele Freeman and husband Donald of Clearfield; two sisters, Bessie Johns and husband Manual and Evelyn Volas and husband Eric, all of Canonsburg; three grandchildren, Alec and Jaclyn Freeman and Nicholas Castanzo; a sister-in-law, Athena Sarris of Canonsburg; a brother-in-law, Thomas Andamasaris of Warren, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased was a brother, Frank Sarris, and a sister, Harriet Kate Andamasaris.

Friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 10 to 11 a.m., the time of services, Monday, September 23, in All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, 601 West McMurray Road, Canonsburg. Spent time caring for grandchildren

Joyce Marie Long, 68, of Burgettstown, passed away suddenly Wednesday, September 18, 2013.

She was born February 8, 1945, a daughter of the late Freda and Chester Greathouse of Wileyville, W.Va.

She was retired for 11 years, time she spent caring for and enjoying her three grandchildren, Dustin, Wyatt and Madelyn Speer, and her dog companion, Wolfie.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Jana and Ralph Speer and their children, Dustin, Wyatt and Madelyn, all of Burgettstown; a daughter, Justina Hendrickson and her children, Clarissa and Cole, all of Minnesota; and a son, John Long II of Minnesota.

She leaves behind many friends and extended family, including close companion of 18 years, Larry McClure of Burgettstown; three special nieces, Donna Straight of New Martinsville, W.Va., Debbie Drennen of Earnshaw, W.Va., and Missy Goode of Valley Bend, W.Va., whom she loved greatly.

Friends will be received from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday in Palmer Funeral Home, Pine Grove, W.Va., where a service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 23. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park, New Martinsville. Condolences may be expressed at palmerfuneral.com.

Pirates fan enjoyed socializing with friends

Bertha M. Povirk, 95, of Cecil, died Wednesday, September 18, 2013, in St. Clair Hospital, Mt. Lebanon.

She was born June 25, 1918, in Cecil, a daughter of the late John and Frances Spelich Henigman.

Mrs. Povirk was a member of St. Mary Parish, its Hilltoppers, Cecil American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and McDonald-Cecil Senior Citizens.

She enjoyed baking, cooking, playing bingo, socializing with friends and cheering on the Pirates.

Mrs. Povirk was a homemaker and later worked as a manager for Foxmoor Clothing in Bridgeville.

Surviving are a son, Edward A. Povirk of Cecil; and two granddaughters, Kristin Povirk of Cecil and Carol Newark of University Park.

Deceased are her husband, Edward J. Povirk, who died in 2004; three brothers, William, Frank and James Henigman; and three sisters, Frances Sabo, Pauline Fife and Jenny Henigman.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Coleman-Taylor Funeral Services, 3378 Millers Run Road (Route 50), Cecil, where prayers of transfer will be said at 9:30 a.m. Monday, September 23, followed at 10 a.m. by a Christian funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church with Father Stan Gregorek officiating. Private entombment will be in Queen of Heaven Mausoleum, Peters Township.

Worked for Westinghouse in Fairmont, W.Va.

Barbara Jean Buchanan Shafer, 84, of Greensboro, W.Va., passed away at 8:05 p.m. Wednesday, September 18, 2013, in Mountainview Rehabilitation Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.

She was born Sunday, February 3, 1929, in Morgantown, a daughter of James and Gertrude Hayes Buchanan.

Mrs. Shafer attended local schools in West Virginia and worked at Westinghouse in Fairmont, W.Va.

She was a member of Mapletown United Methodist Church and a former member of Morgantown Moose Lodge.

Surviving are a daughter and spouse, Linda and Joe Kois Jr.; a granddaughter, Michelle Renee Kois; and two great-granddaughters, Christal and Rhianna, all of Greensboro; several nieces and nephews, including nieces Doris, Janet and Sharon Lorenz of California and Sandra Romano of Fairmont and nephews Charles D. “Danny” Campbell and wife Catherine of Greensburg and Lawrence K. Stieringer and wife JoAnn of Laurel Point, W.Va.; and her “favorite” nieces and nephew, Linda Stimmell, Robert Stimmell and wife Nicole of Morgantown, and Chasity Soccorsi and husband Adel of Doha, Qatar.

Deceased are her loving husband of 64 years, Ralph Q. Shafer, who died May 15, 2011; a brother, Warren Buchanan; three sisters, Betsy Lorenz, Margaret Swyck and Ida Belle Campbell; and special nieces, Patty Markley, Ethel Shreeves and JoAnn Buchanan Swiger.

She was the last of her immediate family.
