J. Allen McAfoos

Served in Navy, retired ophthalmologist

J. Allen McAfoos M.D., 95, of Washington, formerly of Wilkinsburg, died Wednesday, February 5, 2014, in Washington Hospital.

He was born June 12, 1918, in Bellevue, a son of the late Lawrence R. and Anna Allen McAfoos.

Dr. McAfoos was a 1940 graduate of Penn State and a 1943 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

On June 19, 1943, he married Frances Wright McAfoos, who survives.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a medical officer aboard the USS Cottle.

He practiced ophthalmology in Wilkinsburg for many years. After retiring, he resided in Clearwater Beach, Fla., for 25 years.

Dr. McAfoos was a member of Allegheny County Medical Society and enjoyed woodworking.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three daughters, Carol Sonnenberg (Dave) of West Chester, Patricia Crispin of Washington and Linda Gardner (Larry) of Plum; a son, J. Allen McAfoos Jr. (Carol Jean) of Wooster, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a sister, Elizabeth VanCort; a brother, Lawrence McAfoos; and a son-in-law, David Crispin.
