Navy veteran always told stories, jokes

Robert Larkin “Bobby” Caffrey, 81, of Washington, died Wednesday, February 19, 2014, in his home.

He was born October 4, 1932, in Washington, a son of the late Robert and Kathleen Larkin Caffrey.

Mr. Caffrey attended East Washington High School. After graduating in 1951, he attended Cedarville College in Ohio. He left to join the U.S. Navy in 1953, where he served four years on the USS New Kent and the USS Strong. He received the Good Conduct Medal and the National Service Medal.

Mr. Caffrey was also known as “Big Bob.” He enjoyed people; his joys in this life were simple: conversation and visits. He enjoyed a good laugh over a few beers.

Mr. Caffrey volunteered at Washington Hospital. He was an active member of BPOE Lodge 776 and OFL. He worked many jobs from selling cigarettes to being a shipping clerk at Fairmont Supply until his retirement. His favorite job was coaching midget league football at Seventh Ward.

Mr. Caffrey traveled the world with the U.S. Navy, but his favorite spot was Ocean City, Md., where he would spend vacations with his wife, kids and grandkids. He was always laughing and telling stories and jokes, while throwing memorable parties and making new friends. Among his likes were all things sports, especially football, listening to his records on the back porch, watching “Walker, Texas Ranger” and pulling pranks on his loved ones.

A letter from him was never unusual mail, and he often made it a point to call friends and family at all hours of the day just to “brag” about his kids or to say that he was thinking of them. He loved being silly, every single day.

On June 29, 1957, he married Joelle Culley, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Dane (Mary Kay) Caffrey of Wallingford; a daughter; Brenda Caffrey Haught of Washington; a sister, Cordelia Caffrey of McMurray; a brother, Edward (Dorothy) Caffrey of Washington; a sister-in-law, Rose Caffrey of Canonsburg; four grandchildren, Dana (Brian) Bell of Washington, Missy Haught (fiancé John Finnell) of Pittsburgh and Dane Caffrey Jr. and Bobby Caffrey, both of Wallingford; and two great-grandchildren; Morgandy and Adler Bell. Several nieces, nephews and beloved friends also survive.

A brother, Billy Caffrey, is deceased.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Warco-Falvo Funeral Home Inc., Wilson at East Katherine avenues, Washington, S. Timothy Warco, supervisor/director, Susan Falvo Warco, director, S. Timothy Warco II, director. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 24, in the funeral home, with the Rev.
