‘Young, wild and free’

Desire´e Renee Aller, 30, of Harmon Creek, Burgettstown, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, January 25, 2014.

She was born September 19, 1983, the youngest princess of Barry L. and Andrea Hall Aller.

A 2002 graduate of Burgettstown High School, she worked for Original Fish Factory in Pittsburgh and Olive Garden in Robinson Township.

She enjoyed dancing, especially ballet, jazz and tap, music, bon fires and quad riding.

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are two sisters, Angela Marie Wilson of Paris and Miranda Lynn Aller; husband James Harshey Aller of Weirton, W.Va.; two nephews, Riley Aller and Dustin Jesse-William Wilson; maternal grandmother, Margaret E. Hall of Weirton; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Deceased is a nephew, Cody Harshey, and her maternal grandfather, David W. Hall, Sr.

To honor her wishes, services and interment will be private and “by invitation only.”

Steve J. Blumish, Jr. 74, of Bobtown, died unexpectedly Thursday, January 9, 2014, at his home.

All arrangements were private, and in the care of the Richard R. Herod Funeral Home, Point Marion.

Homemaker enjoyed bingo, game shows

Laverne Ina Good, 90, of Washington, formerly of Claysville, died Sunday, January 26, 2014, in Humbert Lane Personal Care Home, South Strabane Township.

She was born August 29, 1923, in Versailles, Allegheny County, a daughter of Frederick Powers and Hazel Currie Powers.

Mrs. Good was a homemaker, whose hobbies included playing bingo, solving crossword puzzles and watching game shows on television. During World War II, she worked in the Goodyear Aircraft factory in Akron, Ohio.

On May 5, 1941, she married Edward R. Good, who died in 1988.

Surviving are two sons, David F. Good of Butler and Darwin Paul Good of Pittsburgh; two daughters, Claudia M. Brooks of Washington and Mary Ann Schoolden of Davey, Florida; a sister, Charlotte Drylie of Brownsville; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Deceased are a daughter, Sherry Haney, and a sister, Flora H. Johns.

Friends will be received in the William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, Wednesday, January 29 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., the time of service, with the Rev. Fred McCloskey officiating.

Member of Upper Ten Mile Presbyterian Church

Theda G. Huffman, 94, of Amity, died Sunday, January 26, 2014, in the Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township.

She was born September 20, 1919, in Cynthiana, Ky., a daughter of the late Irven A. and Lilah Georghegan Williams

In Kentucky, Mrs. Huffman was member of Salem Church of Christ and a member ofWomen of the Moose, Chapter 318, holding degrees of Academy of Friendship and College of Regents. While in Amity, she was a member of the Upper Ten Mile Presbyterian Church.

She was a bartender for many years at the Annawana Club.

Mrs. Huffman was married to Hallie C. Huffman,who died September 20, 1984

She is the last of her immediate family. Also deceased is a sister, Ruth Shrider.

Coal miner was veteran of U.S. Navy

John Popats, 87, of Houston, formerly of Arden and Meadow Lands, died Friday, January 24, 2014, at the Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township.

He was born April 12, 1926, in Meadow Lands, the son of the late George and Edna Schultz Popats.

Mr. Popats was employed as a coal miner for many years at Consolidation Coal until his retirement. He was a member of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Meadow Lands. He also was a member of American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175, Veterans of Foreign Wars 191 and Arden Athletic Club.

Mr. Popats served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 until 1946, receiving the Pacific Theatre Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon, Victory Medal and Philippine Liberation Ribbon.

On August 10, 1946, he married Mildred L. “Babe” Durbin Popats, who is deceased.

Surviving are three daughters, Linda (Bruno) Zanolla, Joni (David) Tomor and Stacy (Robert) Hall, all of Houston; a brother, Frank (Mary Jane) Freno of Washington; a sister, Theodora Lloyd of Meadow Lands; and grandchildren Anthony (Julie) Zanolla of Canonsburg, Gina Zanolla of Houston, Brandy (David) Rossi of Canonsburg, Heather (Louis) Daddea of Houston and Jennifer (Stephen) Plonski of Houston. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Friends will be received Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in Warco-Falvo Funeral Home, Inc., Wilson at E. Katherine Avenues, Washington, S. Timothy Warco, supervisor/director, Susan Falvo Warco, director, S. Timothy Warco II, director. A prayer service will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, January 29 in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in the Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Meadow Lands, with Father John O’Shea as celebrant. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. Full military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 and the U.S. Navy. Alice Shapiro, 85, of Washington, died at 5:45 p.m. Sunday, January 26, 2014

Served his country as U.S. Army Sergeant

William L. Sturm, 80, of North Strabane Township, formerly of Peters Township, passed away Saturday, January 25, 2014, with his family by his side.

He was the loving husband of Carol Sturm and the son of Ralph DeWeese Sturm and Frieda Pape Sturm.

He was born in Oklahoma City, Okla., July 27, 1933. On August 18, 1957, he married Carol Johnson Sturm, and they enjoyed 56 years of their lives together.

Also surviving are three daughters, Tracy (Jeff) Kaier, Robin (Michael) Amuso and Kelly (Harry) Talbert; his great friend and brother-in-law Mike (Pam) Johnson; his seven cherished grandchildren, Matt, Aaron (Courtney) and Nick Amuso, Hanna and Jeremy Kaier, and Abby and Alex Talbert; and two beautiful great-grandchildren, Emery and Sydney.

Mr. Sturm served his nation as a U.S. Army Sergeant First Class during the Korean War, and was honored with the National Defense Medal and Army Good Conduct Medal. He received his Eagle Scout Award, was a 1959 graduate of Washington & Jefferson College and served as president of Peters Township School Board.

He was a wonderful husband, father, brother-in-law, friend and the best grandfather. He will be forever missed.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cremation and Funeral Care in McMurray. A service will be held at Center Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 29. Everyone is asked to please meet at the church.

Loving husband, father and grandfather

Arthur Richard Taylor, 77, of Canonsburg, went to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, January 18, 2014, after a brief illness, while away for work in Madera, Calif.

He was born July 24, 1936, at home in Canonsburg, to Helen and Howard Taylor. He was a graduate of Canonsburg High School and attended Waynesburg College, before entering the U.S. Army, where he played on the football team.

On July 1, 1960, he married the former Donna Jean Hageter.

Mr. Taylor was employed by Henry F. Teichmann Inc., as a senior process designer for 45 years this July. He traveled worldwide and enjoyed his work.

He was a longtime member of the Canonsburg Fire Department, where he was past president, chaplain and served on numerous committees. At the time of his death, he served on the Canonsburg Sewage Department Committee. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion and a member of Bible Chapel Church.

Mr. Taylor loved his Lord foremost and spending time with the love of his life, his wife. He embraced his family and family activities. He cherished fishing with his sons and grandchildren at his refuge, his cabin. He adored his daughters and took delight in his dogs, Gideon and Peek-A-Boo.

Surviving, in addition to his beloved wife, Donna, are two daughters, Helen Taylor of Ellwood City and Heidi Taylor of Canonsburg; three sons, Aaron Taylor of Strabane, Adam Taylor (Karla) of Washington and Ashley Taylor of Canonsburg; six grandchildren, Emily, Christopher, Richard, Nathaniel, Emma and Ethan; and several nieces and nephews.

Cashier at Kwik Fill in Washington

Kathleen Toland, 48, of South Strabane Township, died Thursday, January 23, 2014, in UPMC-Presbyterian hospital, Pittsburgh, following a brief illness.

She was born April 28, 1965, in Washington, a daughter of Hazel Gatten Staley and the late Thomas Staley.

Ms. Toland was a cashier at Kwik Fill in Washington.

She is survived by two sons, Steven and Jessie Toland, both of Washington; a brother, Dennis Staley of Washington; and two sisters, Patricia English of Canonsburg and Pamela Staley of Claysville.

Friends will be received from noon to 1 p.m., the time of service, Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, in the Hummell & Jones Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, Thomas W. 40-year employee at Precision Marshall

Larry Walter Zink, 71, of Washington, died Saturday, January 25, 2014, in his home, after being in declining health for more than a year.

He was born January 19, 1943, in Washington, a son of Walter Zink and Christine Fedis Zink.

Mr. Zink graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1960 and worked as a machine operator and crew leader at Precision Marshall for 40 years.

He was a former member of the Polish Club, Pulaski Club and the Horseshoe Club in Arden. Mr. Zink loved sports, especially bowling and golf, as well as fishing and adult league softball.

He was Catholic by faith.

On January 3, 1972, he married Janet Shober, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Donald Nicholas Muncie and William Kevin (Tracy) Muncie, both of Washington; three daughters, Sonja Lynn (James) Kowcheck and Shelly Ann Zink, both of Washington, and Cynthia Marie Durham of Charleston, S.C.; two sisters, Barbara A. (James) Layman of Morgantown, W.Va., and Cathy J. (Dale) Berisford of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Deceased is a daughter Brenda L. Kraus.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 28 in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where a blessing service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 29, with Father Thomas D. O’Neil officiating.
