WWII Veteran was Church of Christ member

Herbert Abraham Baughman, 88, of Langeloth, died Saturday, March 15, 2014, in Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township.

He was born February 2, 1926, in Philippi, W.Va., a son of the late Carl and Neva Wolfe Baughman.

Prior to his retirement, Mr. Baughman was employed by J&L Steel, Aliquippa. In his later years, he worked as a ticketmaster for Showcase Cinemas West movie theater, Robinson Township.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served during World War II.

Mr. Baughman was a member of Church of Christ in Langeloth, where he was a song leader and member of Burgettstown Senior Citizens.

He was an avid reader, but especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his companion, Nadine.

Surviving are his two daughters, Deborah (Harry) Schoff of Burgettstown and Diane Baughman Huggins of Eldersville; his companion, Nadine Dodds; his grandchildren, Heather (Don) Aivalotis, Ryan (Shawna) Schoff and Tiffany, Kayla and Brandon Huggins; his great-grandchildren, Alexander, Graham and Emily Aivalotis, Gaige and Penelope Schoff and Helena Jenkins.

Deceased are his first wife, Sara Schritchfield, who died in 1984, and his second wife, Mary Wiley, who died in 2008; his brother, Harry Baughman; and his sister, Lorene Eddy.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Taucher Funeral Home, 23 Erie Mine Road, Burgettstown, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, with Pastor Jim Smith officiating. Washington resident loved life

Susan Lee Livingood Bova, 47, of Washington, died Saturday, March 15, 2014, in Washington Hospital, following a lengthy battle with cancer.

She was born June 27, 1966, in Washington, a daughter of Romaine (Charlie) Wright of East Finley, formerly of Washington, and the late Dick Livingood.

Mrs. Bova attended McGuffey High School and received a GED diploma. She was a 2007 graduate of Clayton College of Natural Health, with a bachelor’s of science degree in natural health, receiving highest honors. In 2009, she graduated from Clayton College of Natural Health with a master’s of arts degree in holistic wellness, receiving highest honors.

Mrs. Bova became a master medical massage therapist in 2004, received certification as a sport yoga instructor in 2009 and was certified with the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork in 2011.

She worked as a postal worker for the U.S. Postal Service in 1987 and as an instructor at Penn Commercial in 2004. She also worked as an instructor at Stanford Brown in 2007 and at Pittsburgh Technical Institute from 2009 until her retirement in 2013.

A quick-witted person who loved life and being healthy, Mrs. Bova fought the terrible disease of cancer with everything she had.

She also loved music and enjoyed singing.

A social member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 927, she loved going to the VFW every Friday to play Texas Hold ‘Em with all of her friends, especially when she won first or second place. As she liked to put in her journal, “Holla!”

Mrs. Bova was a loving and generous wife, mother and “Yaya” (grandma).

She will be sadly missed by her husband, soulmate and best friend, Jesse Bova, whom she married July 3, 2000.

Also surviving are two daughters, Kayla Livingood and Cassandra Hirosky, both of Washington, and a stepdaughter, Leandra Bova of Washington; three brothers, Mark (Laura) Livingood of Washington, Rick (Becky) Livingood of Claysville and Dane (Janet) Livingood of Prosperity; two stepbrothers, Charlie Wright Jr. of Washington and Dan (Penny) Wright of Claysville; two sisters, Donna McCartney and Beth Noel, both of Washington; three stepsisters, Sherry (Joe) Cardamore of Washington, Debbie (John) Keenan of Claysville and Tammy (Arlen) Bethel of St. Clairsville, Ohio; three grandchildren, Rigo, Jazzlyn and Rozlynn; and many nieces and nephews.

She will also be sadly missed by her father-in-law, Thomas A. Bova Jr.; mother-in-law Jean O. Bova; brother-in-law Dan Bova; and sister-in-law Rose Bova.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 2 to 4 p.m., the time of services, Wednesday, March 19, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, with Pastor Rick Livingood officiating.

Andrew C. “Poochie” Boyd, 82, of Canonsburg, formerly of Lawrence, died Friday, March 14, 2014, in Canonsburg Hospital.

Worked in defense plant during WWII

Helen M. Holupko, 89, formerly of Masontown, passed away peacefully Friday, March 14, 2014, in her home, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born July 15, 1924, in Grays Landing, a daughter of Andrew and Anna Hunchuck Balash.

Mrs. Holupko was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Masontown, Confraternity of Christian Mothers, Catholic Daughters of America, Faith-Gray-McArdle Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary 4584, Fort Mason American Legion Ladies Auxiliary 423, Pal’s Social Club Ladies Auxiliary, 8/40 Salon 105 and First Catholic Slovak Ladies Union.

During World War II, she worked at a defense plant in Cleveland, Ohio, and was affectionately called “Rosie the Riveter” by her friends and co-workers.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Patty (Balash) Blair and husband Alfred “Butch” of Masontown, Andrea Balash Clark and husband James of Uniontown, with whom she made her home, Michael A. Holupko and wife Darcy of Carmichaels, and Lisa Holupko Glugla and husband Peter of Mt. Wolf; grandchildren Richard Blair and his girlfriend Sharon Beattie, Kelly Kotarsky and husband David, Scott Blair and wife Amy, Jeff Clark, Kim Yauger and husband Derek, Ryan Clark and girlfriend Alyssa, Danielle Glugla, Jessica Glugla and fiancé Cory, Cody Glugla and Sarah Glugla; great-grandchildren Kaitlyn and Blair Kotarsky, Nicholas and Kennedy Yauger and Hunter, Dustin and Lacey Blair; a brother, Charles E. Balas and wife Shirley of Smithfield; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, are husband Michael Holupko; and four brothers and sisters, Joseph Balash, Anne Balash, Paul Balash and Elizabeth Freiberg.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Haky Funeral Home Inc., 515 North Main Street, Masontown, and until 9:30 a.m. Monday, March 17, when prayers of transfer will be said. The funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 101 West Church Avenue, Masontown, with the Rev. Father William G. Berkey as celebrant. Third United Presbyterian Church member

Loretta Hoy, 92, of Washington, died Wednesday, March 12, 2014, in Country Meadows, Bridgeville.

She was born May 15, 1921, in Washington, a daughter of the late John and Mary Pence Giecek.

Mrs. Hoy attended Trinity High School.

A homemaker, she was a member of Third United Presbyterian Church for 56 years. She was also a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 404.

On February 21, 1946, she married Paul Hoy, who died July 1, 2004.

Surviving are a sister, Blanche G. Sworden of Silver Creek, Ga., and several nieces, nephews and grandnephews.

Deceased are three brothers, Joseph, Walter and John Giecek, and three sisters, Helen McNeely, Olga Adams and Jennie Cerenzia.

East Carnegie resident

Hazel Jane Brewer Johnson, 92, of East Carnegie, died Thursday, March 13, 2014.

She was the wife of the late Henry B. Johnson; mother of Henry “Butch” (Amy) Johnson, Arthur (Leslie) Johnson and the late Joseph Johnson and Betty Jane King; grandmother of 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; and sister of the late Leroy and Kenneth Brewer.

Also surviving are her special childhood friends, Dorothy Lipscomb and Edwina Branch, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Maintained family’s Serbian traditions

Doris “Mutchie” Kotch, 82, died peacefully March 6, 2014.

She was born March 30, 1931, a daughter of Mike and Angelia Popovich Kotch.

Ms. Kotch was an independent soul with a puckish sense of humor. Though never married, she was a favorite of children, who found her honest and wry. She knew the intricacies of the local swimming hole, as well as the pinball machines at the local store.

Ms. Kotch helped maintain her family’s Serbian traditions, for many years hosting Orthodox Christmas and Easter gatherings, including a whole roast pig, for her extensive and far-flung relatives.

She was a lifelong resident of Crucible, Greene County, where she worked at Stan-Lee’s Dairy Bar, delivered mail to neighbors despite not being a postal worker, mowed lawns and maintained the modest home where she was born. She spent her last year at Baptist Homes in Mt. Lebanon, where she found new friends and wonderful caregivers.

Surviving are her twin sister, Dolores “Dee” (Thomas) Conlin; her brother, J. Daniel Kotch and his wife, Sally; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, are sisters Amy (Leonard) Neimetz and Minnie (Pete) Garone and brothers Steve, Nick (Faye), Pete (Erma), George (Irene) and William (Edna Lee) Kotch.

In accordance with her wishes, there will be no public viewing, but a memorial gathering is planned for family and friends. In lieu of flowers or other remembrances, donations to Baptist Homes, 489 Castle Shannon Boulevard, Pittsburgh, PA 15234, are encouraged in recognition of the care they provided to Ms. Kotch.

St. Thomas Moore R.C. Church member

Albina Elizabeth Mutschler, 98, formerly of Bethel Park, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2014, in Consulate Retirement Village of North Strabane surrounded by her loving family.

She was born June 6, 1915, in Monongahela, a daughter of the late William A. and Susanna Sarnosky Hays.

Mrs. Mutschler lived most of her life in the Pittsburgh and Bethel Park areas, where she was a member of St. Thomas Moore R.C. Church.

She enjoyed baking, playing cards and doing crossword puzzles.

On September 6, 1937, she married her beloved husband of 57 years, William James Mutschler, who passed away May 6, 1994.

Surviving are two sons, Bill (Betty) Mutschler of Blairstown, N.J., and Tom (Donna) Mutschler of Murrysville; a daughter, Peggy (Jim) Baumgartner of Canonsburg; seven grandchildren, Bill (Kelly) Mutschler III, Brett Mutschler, Dawn (Greg) Dillner, Tomm (Jill) Mutschler, Charlie (Kim) Mutschler and Ryan and Brooke Baumgartner; seven great-grandchildren, Maggie and Aidan Mutschler, Jada and Joey Dillner and Ben, Henry and Samantha Mutschler; two sisters, Ann Lenik of Finleyville and Susan Haburchak of Monongahela; and a brother, William Hays of Monongahela.

Deceased are a sister, Mary Ritmanich, and a brother, Joseph Hays.

Jane Ann Hobson Snyder, 62, passed peacefully in her sleep Thursday, March 13, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mrs. Snyder was the loving mother of Melissa A. (Nick) Veltri and Joshua F. Snyder; the beloved sister of John P. (Marg) Hobson, Mary Ann Hobson; and sister-in-law of Janice (Tim) Haas. There to greet her with outstretched arms and loving hearts are her late parents, Honor and Harry Hobson, and her one true love, Bill, who passed just three years earlier.

Mrs. Snyder was an active member of St. Benedict Church and Contemporary Choir. She loved being with friends and family, cooking, antiquing, walking with her rescued Morkie, Izabella, gardening and being outdoors.

Lifelong Washington resident

Virginia Mae Jones Walker, 96, passed into her Lord’s loving arms Wednesday, March 12, 2014, in Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township.

She was born April 13, 1917, in Washington, a daughter of the late Delbert and Hattie E. McMullen Jones, and was a lifelong resident of Washington.

Mrs. Walker was a homemaker and a member of Fourth Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking and spending special times with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was married to Jack H. Walker, who died February 10, 1971.

Surviving are two sons, Ret. Lt. Col. David D. (Diana) Walker of Schertz, Texas, and Phillip R. Walker of Washington; five grandchildren, Jack Walker, Mark Walker, Tammi (George) Horr, Marc (Tammy) Walker and Michele (John) Mierzejewski; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are her husband, Jack; a son, Jack N. Walker; two brothers, Oscar N. (Buck) Jones and Harry H. Jones; and six sisters, Bertha Emrick, Orma L. Sample, Thelma Gshinsky, Myrtle Pilgun, Grace E. Baldwin and Ethel Jones, who died in infancy.
