Edward Monroe Vandegrift lll
Edward “Duke” Monroe Vandegrift lll, 93, of McMurray, passed away quietly Sunday, October 29, 2017.
A lifelong resident of Pennsylvania, he was born October 4, 1924, in New Castle, to Edward M. Vandegrift ll and Hellen Peterson.
A voracious reader since childhood, he was rarely without a book or newspaper at hand.
He traveled the world by joining the U.S. Navy at 17, shortly after Pearl Harbor.
His hobbies and interests included hunting and fishing, dogs, gardening and the Steelers. He was very much a product of the difficult times experienced by his generation. He was serious, hardworking and patriotic and held deep Christian beliefs. He also had a good sense of humor and a laugh that roared.
Mr. Vandegrift graduated from Brentwood High School and attended Duquesne University. He spent his entire professional career in commercial banking.
He and his wife Dorothy “Dot” Louise Black, also of Brentwood, married in 1948 and moved to McMurray, where they resided together for the rest of their lives.
Surviving are three sons, Edward (Betty Jean) Vandegrift IV of Washington, John Vandegrift of Pittsburgh and Tom (Tonra) Vandegrift; two grandsons, Lee and Will Vandegrift of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased are his wife, Dorothy, and his younger brother, Robert.
Funeral arrangements by Beinhauers, 724-941-3211. Interment with full military honors for family and friends will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday, November 13, in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township.
