Sara Serenta Cargiene

Sara Serenta Cargiene, 90, of Canonsburg, died Sunday, November 19, 2017.

She was born September 22, 1927, in Marianna, a daughter of the late Arthur “Boss” and Margaret “Peg” Risbin Serenta.

Mrs. Cargiene was an active member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Canonsburg, where she was active with Christian Mothers and Women’s Guild for 54 years, serving three terms as president. She was a member of Catholic Daughters of America, now Washington Court, for 54 years.

She was a member of National Society of Registered Nurses and Washington Hospital Nurses Alumni. She served as president of Washington-Greene County Catholic Nurses under Bishop Anthony Bosco. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels for five years.

Mrs. Cargiene traveled to Italy several times and chartered a bus trip to Washington, D.C., in 1971 to see Pope John Paul.

She graduated from West Bethlehem High School (Bethlehem-Center) in 1945, then continued her education and graduated from Washington Hospital School of Nursing in 1948.

Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Cargiene worked at Washington Hospital for 35 years. She later owned and operated Locust Manor Personal Care Home from 1979 to 2004.

She was a dedicated and loving wife and mother.

On October 4, 1948, she married her loving husband of 68 years, Frank Anthony Cargiene, who passed away October 4, 2016.

Surviving are a son, Frank Anthony Cargiene Jr. and wife Debbie of Eighty Four; a daughter, Margaret Ottena and husband Barry of Houston; four grandchildren, Frank (Jennifer) Cargiene III of Dover, Nicole Cargiene of Pittsburgh, Christopher (Kristen) Ottena of Erie and John (Heather) Ottena of Baltimore, Md.; and two great-grandchildren, Carter and Caroline Ottena.

Mrs. Cargiene was the last of her immediate family.

Deceased, in addition to her parents and husband, is a brother, Arthur Serenta Jr.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Sollon Funeral and Cremation Services Ltd., 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, Phillip L. Sollon, supervisor, J. David Sollon, director, 724-746-1000. The Christian Mothers of St. Patrick Church will celebrate recitation of the Rosary at 2 p.m. Wednesday. There will be no public visitation Thursday. Departing prayers will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, November 24, in the funeral home, followed at 10 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Canonsburg. Burial will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Peters Township.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests memorial contributions to St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Canonsburg, or a charity of choice in Mrs. Cargiene’s name.
