Donald Stewart Hoge
Donald Stewart Hoge, 92, passed away peacefully in his home in West Alexander, Wednesday, April 18, 2018.
Born November 20, 1925, he was a son of the late Morgan Tilton and Flora Booth Hoge.
He was a life member and trustee of West Alexander Presbyterian Church. Don graduated from the former West Alexander High School in 1944. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, as seaman first class, aboard USS BellaTrix in the 7th fleet, Pacific Theater and had many fond memories of the time spent in San Diego, Calif., following the war.
Don was a former director of West Alexander Fair Association and past president and director of West Alexander Cemetery Association. He took great pride in raising beef cattle for most of his life, and his grass-fed cattle always sold at a premium. His reputation as a successful farmer was widely known. Don also worked at Brockway Glass Plant 7 in Washington for 30 years and retired in 1983.
Don was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anne Hoge; parents Morgan Tilton and Flora Booth Hoge; brothers Carl and Jim Hoge; and sister Frances Stewart.
He is survived by a sister, Judy Daly and husband Philip Daly of West Alexander; brother Wayne Hoge and wife Louise Hoge of West Alexander; son Garrett Hoge and wife Anita Hoge of Peters Township; and daughter Lynne Glessner and husband Frank Glessner of Washington.
He had six grandchildren including Garrett Hoge II (Ivorry Hoge), Jessica Hoge (Matt Speakman), Allison Hoge (Adam Kukic), Dana Glessner (J.D. Batove), Amy Glessner Snyder (Nich Snyder) and Erin Glessner McCormick (John McCormick). He was also blessed to have eight great-grandchildren, including Westin Stewart Hoge, Cora Anne and Mae Speakman, Nathaniel and Loralie Snyder, Gavin and Evan McCormick and Jacob Batove.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to noon, the hour of service, Saturday, April 21, with the Rev. Tim Florence officiating, in West Alexander United Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in West Alexander Cemetery with full graveside military rites under direction of the West Alexander American Legion Post 676.
