Sylvia Dawn Francis Mathews

Sylvia Dawn Francis Mathews, 83, a longtime resident of Dilliner (Dunkard), passed away Friday, April 27, 2018, in her home, following a brief illness.

She was born September 18, 1934, in Independence, W.Va., a daughter of the late John M. and Edna P. Triplett Francis.

She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Dunkard, where she served for 36 years as treasurer. Sylvia was also a member of the former Rebekah Lodge of Dunkard and a past president of Bobtown Parent-Teacher Association.

In 1996, she retired as supervisor after 22 years working in the deli department at Krogers in Morgantown, W.Va.

In her retirement, Sylvia enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting, scrapbooking, crafts and adding to her collection of more than 600 salt and pepper shakers. Each of her family received a beautiful afghan handmade by her. She also loved canning, working in her garden and flower beds and especially having time to spend with her children and their families.

Surviving are her five children and their spouses, Norman “Sonny” and Carol Mathews of Boardman, Ohio, Norma Dawn and Charles Barry of Dilliner, Debbie Ann and Donald Mynster of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., Jonea and Rusty Haney of Dilliner and LuAnn and Kerry Bodnovich of Cleveland, Ohio; 12 grandchildren and their spouses, David (Tina) Mathews, Steven Mathews, Mathew (Sarah) Barry, Mickey (Julie) Barry, Molly (Josh) Willis, Andy Haney, Audrey (Mike) Mlay, Adam Haney and Kerry, Karson, Kolton and Karter Bodnovich; 10 great-grandchildren, twins Breanna and Brittany Mathews, Owen and Ean Barry, Dublin, Talia and Malainn Barry and Mick, Emily and Laney Mlay; three brothers, Harry (Kathy) Francis, Dicky (Sandy) Francis and John Allen Francis; and a sister, Marion (Pokey) Lane.

Deceased are her husband of nearly 58 years, Norman F. Mathews, who died March 17, 2012; a son, David, who died in infancy; a granddaughter, Emily Mynster; and a sister, Shirley Booth.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Richard R. Herod Funeral Home, Point Marion. An additional visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Tuesday, May 1, in First Baptist Church of Dunkard, Taylortown, with her grandson, Josh Willis, officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Taylortown.
