Betty Zane Hickman Binns
Betty Zane Hickman Binns, 96, of Brownsville, died peacefully in the early hours of the morning Friday, August 10, 2018, in Uniontown Hospital.
She was born February 17, 1922, in Beallsville, a daughter of Sarah Ann Hickman Webeck and Norman Jacob Hickman. She was also predeceased by her older brother Charles Musser Hickman and her husband of 50 years, William Morris Binns. She had a great fondness for her grandmother, Lucinda Newman Webeck.
She is survived by two children, Carol Ann Metcalf (Douglass) and William M. Binns Jr. (Linda); four grandchildren, William “Trapper” M. Binns III (Louise), Joshua L. Binns (Tiffany), Sarah B. Metcalf (Sam) and Keith D. Metcalf; and nine great-grandchildren, Abigail, Evalee, Baron, Hannah, Leah, Camden, Trapper, Arden and Emrys.
Although at birth her doctor thought her too small to survive, Betty proved him wrong! She persevered through the Great Depression, a heart attack and cancer. She was the valedictorian of her class at Beallsville High School and graduated from business school. While working at Hazel-Atlas Glass Co. during World War II, she was promoted to run scientific tests on materials. At the end of the war, she married Staff Sgt. Wm. Binns and worked hard to take care of her family in the old stone farmhouse on Ridge Road.
Betty was a member of Taylor Methodist Church and volunteered at Fredericktown Public Library. She enjoyed researching family history, reading, crossword puzzles, card games, playing the organ, watching birds and taking in the view from her porch swing. She lived independently with wit and humor until her very last days. She will be missed.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in John B. Greenlee Funeral Home Ltd., 2830 Main Street, Beallsville, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 13, with Pastor Julie Kolacz officiating.
