Harley McVay

Harley McVay passed away Thursday, August 30, 2018, in Winter Haven, Fla., at the age of 96.

He was born in 1922 in Washington, a son of Clifton S. and Wanda B. Roush McVay.

Harley grew up in Southwestern Pennsylvania and graduated from Hickory High School in 1940.

In 1943, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet and, while in training, married the love of his life, Betty. He earned his wings and flew as co-pilot on B-17’s. He flew with the crew of the “Qualified Quail” in the 401st squadron, 91st Bomber Group (heavy) as part of the “Mighty 8th” Air Force out of Bassingbourn, England. Harley flew 32 missions before returning to Pennsylvania and his wife. He was still serving in the air reserves when he was called up to fly B-26’s in the Korean conflict. Harley enjoyed a lifelong love of aviation. He flew for American Airlines for 29 years, until his retirement in 1982. He continued flying his Taylorcraft and other private planes for many more years.

All three of Harley’s sons inherited his love of flying and are pilots. Harley loved and was devoted to his family, his wife, children and grandchildren.

He enjoyed golf and working on his farm. He played the guitar and liked singing folk songs. He also sang as part of the church choir for many years in the Presbyterian church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Stewart McVay.

He is survived by his three sons, Clifford A. McVay (Penny), Myron A. McVay (Judy) and Willis A. McVay (Erna). Harley was a loving grandfather to nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

There will be a private service at a later date.
