George F. Postlethwait

George F. Postlethwait, 79, of Prosperity, passed away peacefully Thursday, February 1, 2018, at The Grove of Washington, after fighting for 15 months against glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer.

He was born June 6, 1938, in Washington, to the late Fred and Hazel Moore Postlethwait.

He married the love of his life, Joan Hunter, September 5, 1959, and they spent many happy anniversaries in their camper at Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Mr. Postlethwait graduated from Trinity High School in 1956, attended night school at Pitt and graduated with an associate’s degree in psychology from Washington & Jefferson College, while working full-time as a lineman for West Penn Power. He retired from West Penn after 35 years of service.

A proud U.S. Army veteran, he served in the 630th Transportation Company at Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, N.C., from 1961 to 1962. He particularly enjoyed participating in the Veterans’ Day programs at Joe Walker Elementary School and was a member of Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175 in Washington.

Mr. Postlethwait was a faithful member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Prosperity for 60 years and served as both deacon and ruling elder. His hobbies included restoring Gravely tractors with his friend Ed Minton, golf, Western square dancing, building birdhouses, shooting sporting clays, attending car shows with his nephew Doug, working out and socializing with his friends at Cameron Wellness Center and attending McGuffey sporting events.

In addition to his parents, deceased are his brother Ord Postlethwait, sisters Virginia Houston and Elsie Baker and a niece, Joyce Stein.

Mr. Postlethwait is survived by his wife Joan; niece Darlene (Jack) Houser; nephews Douglas Houston, Edward Baker and Tom Postlethwait; nieces Cindy and Pam Postlethwait; and a host of family and friends who will miss his kind heart and dry sense of humor.

Friends will be received from noon to 2 and 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at William G. Neal Funeral Home Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 5, at Bethel Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 3905 Park Avenue South, Prosperity, with the Rev. Eric Toohey of Bethel and the Rev. Joshua Brown of Bellefield Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh, officiating. Interment will follow at Upper Ten Mile Cemetery, Prosperity. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
