Martha Rebecca Markley

Martha Rebecca Markley, 69, of Washington, died Monday, January 15, 2018, while in hospice care at Donnell House, Washington.

She was born December 4, 1948, in Washington, a daughter of the late Lawrence Erwin Cox and Betty Jane Stainbrook Cox.

Ms. Markley was a 1966 graduate of Bentleyville-Ellsworth High School and a graduate of Washington Hospital School of Nursing.

She was previously married in 1971.

Ms. Markley has two surviving children: James L. “Bo” Markley, 39, and Jennifer Leigh Markley Ewing, 41, both of Washington.

She worked as a registered nurse in the emergency department of Washington Hospital for several years. She later worked as an occupational health nurse for Washington Steel Corp. and Falcon Plastics in Washington. In 2004, she moved to Ohio, where she worked as a nurse in a correctional facility and at Roxane Laboratories. After suffering a heart attack in 2005, she was no longer able to work and returned to Washington to retire with her family.

Ms. Markley enjoyed cooking, painting ceramics and spending time with her friends, children and grandchildren. She also loved animals and was very fond of her cat, Ash.

Throughout years of hardship and failing health, she always put the needs of her family and those she cared about before her own.

Surviving, in addition to her children, are a brother, Ronald Cox (Linda) of Claysville; two sisters, Barbara Keenan (Larry) and Amanda Oberst (the late Richard Oberst) of Washington; a son-in-law, Michael J. Ewing of Washington; a grandson, Michael W. “Mikey” Ewing; a granddaughter, Lily Evelyn Ewing; and her son’s girlfriend, Kristen Janovich.

Deceased is a brother, Lawrence Cox.

Private cremation services will be held per Ms. Markley’s wishes. A private memorial service will be held Friday, January 19, in Washington Cemetery. A celebration of her life will be held for close family and friends at 5 p.m. Friday in Hungry Jose’s, Washington.

Memorial contributions may be made in person at her memorial celebration.
