Mary Elizabeth Day Haines, 88, of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 24, 2018, in her home, surrounded by love.

She was born May 4, 1930, in Washington. She was one of five children born to Hugh Paul Sr. and Anna Day, all of whom have gone to join her Lord before her.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Stewart Williams Haines Sr.

Family was Mary’s first and foremost priority. She was mother, mentor and matriarch to eight children.

Preceding her in death were her children, Stewart William Haines Jr. and Sandra L. Pinner.

Celebrating her life are her surviving children and their spouses, Judith L. Haines, Larry E. Haines, Daniel L. Haines and wife Kathryn, Kenneth P. Haines, Kimberly H. Barrow and Kitti S. Brooks and husband William “Russ”; and a daughter-in-law, Robin Haines (widow of JR Haines). Continuing on her legacy of family, friends and love are also 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Mary was a resident of Washington for 78 of her 88 years of life. She was a 1948 graduate of Trinity High School.

Her spiritual home was as a member of North Buffalo Presbyterian Church congregation in Washington. In her later years, she lived in Houston, Texas, where she was a member of Addicks United Methodist Church.

Mary was always a volunteer at heart, and over the years, she served in countless community, school, farming and fair organizations and at a volunteer fire department. She selflessly donated her time and gifts and was a shining example of her Lord’s definition of a “humble servant.” She was serving at Houston Food Bank up until a few weeks before her death. She will be sorely missed by so many she has touched, cared for and loved.

Visitations for Mary will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 1, with Pastor Gary Gibson officiating. Interment will follow in Upper Ten Mile Church Cemetery, Prosperity. Following interment, a memorial reception meal will be served at North Buffalo Presbyterian Church.
