Eleanor Kottner DeWitte

Eleanor “Ellie” Kottner DeWitte, 82, of Washington, passed into the arms of her Lord Wednesday, June 6, 2018.

She was born September 29, 1935, in Washington Hospital, a daughter of the late Carl W. and Maude A. Bell Kottner.

She attended Lone Pine Grade School and graduated from Trinity High School in 1953. During her senior year, she was honored to receive the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award. That year, she also served in the May Queen’s Court.

She graduated from Penn Commercial College in 1954, and began her more than 40 years with West Penn Power Co. She held various positions, including secretary to the division manager, division personnel manager, accounting clerk and payroll and plant accounting clerk. During her years of employment, she also took night classes at Washington & Jefferson College, graduating from a two-year management course. She served on the board of directors for West Penn Federal Credit Union, until it merged with Washington Community Federal Credit Union.

She was united in marriage with Joseph S. DeWitte, who survives, May 19, 1956, in First Church of the Nazarene, by the Rev. Clarence Neiderheiser. She and her husband celebrated 62 years of marriage this year.

She was an avid sports fan, supporting the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins. She also rooted for Penn State and Ohio State football teams. She also enjoyed NASCAR, cheering on the drivers for Rick Hendricks Motor Sports.

During the 1980s, her husband drove the equipment bus for Trinity High School Marching Band. They traveled to many band competitions in the area and to Pontiac, Mich., and Indianapolis, Ind.

She was a life member of Order of the former Eastern Star Lincoln Chapter 112.

She enjoyed playing Sudoku and crossword and jigsaw puzzles. In her early years, she took ceramic and oil painting classes.

She was a member of Abundant Life Baptist Church, Washington, where she served on the social action team for many years.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a son, Joseph Carl DeWitte; a sister, Betty C. (Wray) Iddings; two best friends, Norma Kuhn and Rosie Cenis; and a special buddy, Tony Zenner, all of Washington. She is also survived by many friends from Abundant Life Baptist Church.

Friends will be received from 10:30 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Saturday, June 9, in Abundant Life Baptist Church, 269 Cameron Road, Washington, with the Rev. George Garancosky Jr. officiating.

The family suggests memorial contributions be directed to Abundant Life Baptist Church.
