Lawrence Allen Morgan

Lawrence Allen “Larry” Morgan, 93, of Washington, died Monday, June 11, 2018, in Mt. Lebanon Rehabilitation and Wellness Center.

He was born January 9, 1925, in Washington, a son of Evan and Effie Hutchison Morgan.

Like many young men who answered this nation’s call to duty during World War II, Mr. Morgan left high school at age 17 to join the military, thus ending his high school education. In appreciation of his sacrifice, Washington High School granted him his diploma in 2002.

Mr. Morgan served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Princeton CVL-23, traveling 170,000 miles, the majority in the Pacific Ocean. He was involved in many operations in the Pacific, including the occupation of Baker Island, raids on Tarawa and Makin Islands, operations on Gilbert Island, attacks on Marshall Islands, and the capture and occupation of Saipan. On July 10, 1944, he was commended by the Commanding Officer of the USS Princeton for excellent performance and devotion to duty in operations against the enemy. He was honorably discharged April 7, 1945, with a rank of aviation machinist’s mate, 3rd class.

For 40 years, he was employed as a freight conductor for Pennsylvania Railroad/Penn Central/Conrail.

He was a member of New Hope Church, where he served as an elder and played in the dart ball league. In addition, he was a member of American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175, Sunset Lodge F&AM 623 and Syria Temple Shriners.

Mr. Morgan enjoyed camping and golfing.

On October 11, 1945, he married Lillian “Kay” Dornberger, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Thomas Morgan of Washington; four daughters, Linda (Kevin) Richard, Virginia Morgan (Frank Insana), Jackie (Frank) Jeffers and Susan (Matt) Smith, all of Washington; 20 grandchildren, Chris Horvath, Steve, Rich, Matt and Josh Roberts, Ginger Crawford, Bridgette Garver, Tim, Dan, Rob and Mike Morgan, Debbie Crawford, David and Jason Harvey, Jodi Schorr, Jake, Derek and Ann Jeffers, and Kayla and Emily Smith; 37 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister Barbara Jean (Dan) Gagich of Washington; numerous nieces and nephews; daughter-in-law Daunice Morgan of Washington; and a son-in-law, Chuck Roberts of Toronto, Ohio.

Deceased are a son, Ronald Morgan; daughter Janice Roberts; five brothers, Evan, John, Richard, Harry and William Morgan; and five sisters, Gertrude Taylor, Margaret Richmond, Rachel Kinkle, Mary Ann Guido and Joan DePaoli.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 15, with the Rev. Tom Bellhy officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175.
