Richard Mowl and Mary Margaret Mowl

A private memorial will be held for Richard R. “Dick” Mowl, who passed away May 23, 2017, and for his wife, Mary Margaret “Maggie” Engle Gregg Mowl, who died Tuesday, June 12, 2018.

Both Richard and Mary Margaret, after lengthy illnesses, passed away in their home in the care of their family.

An avid hunter and outdoorsman, Richard was born January 28, 1937, in Brownsville, a son of the late W.E. Mowl and Anna Bajac Mowl. He was raised by his uncle and aunt, the late Wylie and Permelia Shipe in Lone Pine. A graduate of Trinity High School, he worked at McGraw-Edison in Canonsburg and later became a wireman with Bethlehem Mines Corp. Richard was a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 1197, retiring from 84 Mining Co.

Mary Margaret was born July 2, 1934, in Washington, a daughter of the late Carl C. “Pug” Engle and Margaret Ruth “Peg” Fonner Engle. She attended Washington schools and worked at Brockway Glass Plant before marrying Robert H. Gregg August 23, 1952 (deceased August 17, 1966). For many years, Mary Margaret enjoyed helping people in her work as a certified massage therapist and reflexologist.

On June 2, 1969, Richard and Mary Margaret were married by Father Alfred C. Cicola at Immaculate Conception Church in Washington.

They were the loving parents of Melody Ann Gregg DePretis, Jody Dee VanVarenberg (Keith), Bobbi Jean Gregg and Surri Lynn Mowl. They were PaPa and Nanny to grandchildren Meshach Miller, Mellory DePretis Birner (David), Kyle Cameron DePretis, Keith Richard VanVarenberg, Makala VanVarenberg Turner (Travis), Tristen Bowman and Bella Bowman, and great-grandparents to Meshach John Miller, Mierra Peyton Miller and Melody Lovas Birner.

In addition to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Mrs. Mowl is survived by sisters Pearl Ann Amos and Karen Jane Sulc (Joe), along with several nieces and nephews. Mr. Mowl is survived by a nephew, Jeffrey Seaman (Debbie) of Charleston, W.Va.

Deceased, in addition to their parents are their precious granddaughter, Sha Lynn Spalding; great-grandson Gabriel John Birner; son-in-law Louis R. DePretis; Mr. Mowl’s brothers, William Mowl and Frank D. Mowl, and a sister, Marceline Mowl King; and Mrs. Mowl’s brothers, Carl (Bud) Engle and David Engle, and a sister, Laura Lee Cox.

The special ladies, as well as the nurses and staff of Amedysis Hospice Services, assisted in caring for Richard and Mary Margaret.

Arrangements were entrusted to William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington.
