Paul L. Sims

Paul L. Sims, 94, of Marianna, passed away Thursday, June 14, 2018, in his home.
He was born February 11, 1924, in Moundsville, W.Va., a son of the late Custer and Melba Fowler Simms.
Mr. Sims was a 1943 graduate of South Fayette High School.
For 38 years, he worked as a welder for General Motors, retiring in 1987.
Mr. Sims was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving from 1943 to 1946 with the 710th Tank Battalion, which was the only moving tank battalion in the Pacific Theater. For his service, he was awarded the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and Bronze Star with five battle stars. He qualified as a sharpshooter in both pistol and carbines and was an expert in submachine guns.
He was honored by Iroquois Post 1587 in New York as a World War II honoree.
Mr. Sims was a longtime member of National Rifle Association and a member of Hancock-McCune-Horne American Legion Post 705, Centerville, and was a member of Council of Three Rivers, American Indian Center of Pittsburgh and Garwood Baptist Church.
Mr. Sims enjoyed traveling out west with his late wife. They had been in every state with the exception of the New England area. They especially enjoyed traveling to National Parks and Indian Reservations.
He enjoyed obedience training German Shepherds and also trained Quarter Horses and Appaloosa Horses for show by their children.
Raising honey bees and chickens were also his interests.
On November 16, 1946, he married Rosemarie Kresak, who died December 29, 2008.
Surviving are a son David Sims (Paula) of Eighty Four; four grandchildren, David Wanner (Danielle), Nick Wanner (Kendra), Danielle Kearns (Tim) and April Sims; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to his parents and wife, are two daughters, Christine Freshwater and Paula Sims Wanner, stepsister Ruth Heaps and stepbrother Ray Albright.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Greenlee Funeral Home, 619 Main Street, Bentleyville, where funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, with Pastor Kevin Carpenter officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. Military rites will be accorded by Hancock-McCune-Horne American Legion Post 705, Centerville.
