Alberta Black Mason Sutherland
Alberta Black Mason Sutherland, 90, beloved mother and devoted friend, entered the gates of Heaven Wednesday, June 20, 2018.
Known to her friends as “Bert,” she was born September 26, 1927, the second eldest of nine children born to the late Lindsey and Lucy Durbin Black.
A lifelong resident of the Waynesburg area, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Grant Dean Sutherland Sr., who died January 17, 2001; daughter Sandy Mason; son Bill Mason; stepdaughter Lynn Stanton; stepson Lee Sutherland; her former husband, Alan Mason; and brothers, Alvie, Jim, George and Harry Black.
Bert is survived by stepchildren Grant and Chris Sutherland, Jill Farrell and Ken and Mary Stanton. She also leaves behind brothers John, Ralph and Chuck Black; sister Patty Smitley; and sisters-in-law Florence and Patty Black. Bert leaves behind a great legacy of seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She attended Waynesburg College and worked for Greenway Shirt Factory, from where she retired as a supervisor after 20 years in 1972. She was a bookkeeper for Grant Logging Company. Upon retirement, she and her husband, Grant, traveled the country, visiting 48 out of 50 states.
Upon her request, there will be no viewing, and burial will be private at Oakmont Cemetery, Waynesburg. A memorial service and celebration of Bert’s life will be announced at a later date.
