Genevieve Wiencek Kulmoski

Genevieve Wiencek Kulmoski, 102, of Washington, died Sunday, June 24, 2018.

She was born October 17, 1915, in Arden, the middle of nine children to John and Teofila Drzazga Wiencek.

Mrs. Kulmoski attended Immaculate Conception grade school and high school. She was a lifelong member of St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church, where her father helped build and establish the original St. Hilary Parish. Mrs. Kulmoski was also a member of Christian Mothers of St. Hilary. She was the last and oldest original member of the church. Mrs. Kulmoski was very strong in her faith and attended weekday masses at Immaculate Conception Church.

She was employed at Tygart Valley in Washington before she was married and early on in her marriage. Mrs. Kulmoski worked at Ernie’s Esquire in McMurray for a short time, helped her brother and his family at Wiencek’s Dairy Bar and worked for over 30 years on Canton Township Number Five Election Board as an inspector of elections.

She spent her entire life in the Washington area, but was fond of traveling. Mrs. Kulmoski visited her brothers while they were in military service and visited her family in Indiana, Texas and Florida. She spent many winters in Florida with her brother, Stanley Wiencek Sr. and family. While in Florida, she witnessed the launch of a space shuttle. Mrs. Kulmoski saw President John F. Kennedy when he visited Washington in 1960. She also met President Gerald Ford while in Florida. She enjoyed reminiscing about the lower prices of the past, especially when Shorty’s hot dogs were 10 cents each and when gasoline could be bought for 20 cents a gallon. Mrs. Kulmoski enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and concerts. She was an avid sports fan and attended numerous Pirates games at Forbes Field, Three Rivers Stadium and PNC Park. She attended Steelers training camp and several games at Heinz Field, where she was able to meet several Steelers of the 1970s and 1980s. She also attended West Virginia University football games with her son, who graduated from there. Recently, she became interested in following the Ohio State football team since her granddaughter, Alyssa, graduated from there.

On May 2, 1948, in St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church, she married John Anthony Kulmoski Sr., who died March 8, 1974.

Surviving are two daughters, Maryann (Will) Rosena of Bloomington, Ind. and Carol Jean (Harry Richard) Roberts of Washington; son John Anthony Kulmoski Jr. of Katy, Texas; three grandchildren, Dr. Will A. (Sylvia Leibrandt) Rosena Jr. of Ontario, Canada, Alena Marie Roberts of Pittsburgh and Alyssa Ann Roberts of Ohio; three great-grandchildren, Marcus Rosena, Abigail Rosena and Ella Rosena; two sisters-in-law, Helen Jean Wiencek and Dolores Kulmoski. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Mrs. Kulmoski was the last of her immediate family.

In addition to her father, mother and husband, Mrs. Kulmoski was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Steve, Francis and Stanley Wiencek, and four sisters, Adele Szolek, Anna Wiencek, Helen Koziel and Josephine Wiencek.

Friends will be received from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday in Warco-Falvo Funeral Home Inc., Wilson at East Katherine Avenue, Washington, S. Timothy Warco, supervisor/director, Susan Falvo Warco, director, S. Timothy Warco II, director. A prayer service will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, July 2, in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. Carmen D’Amico as celebrant. Burial will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church, 340 Henderson Avenue, Washington, PA 15301 or to the charity of one’s choice.
