Roy Melvin Hill
Roy Melvin Hill, 85, of Hickory, died unexpectedly Saturday, March 3, 2018, in Washington Hospital.
He was born December 16, 1932, in Washington, a son of the late Huber and Anna Briggs Hill.
A 1952 graduate of Hickory High School, he was a member of Atlasburg Church of the Nazarene.
A veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Hill served with the U.S. Army, assigned to the Service Battery 780th Field Artillery Battalion in Korea, until his honorable discharge as a corporal March 14, 1961. For his service, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.
For more than 45 years, he worked as a printing press operator for Union Camp Corp., which became International Paper.
Mr. Hill was a huge baseball fan, who enjoyed going to the community center, playing dartball, delivering Meals on Wheels and volunteering at the Apple Festival.
On November 30, 1956, he married Erla Jean Bonner, who died March 24, 2004.
Surviving are a son, R. Ronald (Deronda) Hill of Washington; two daughters, Karen (Jim) Fisher of Springboro, Ohio, and Joyce (Michael) Gildea of Castle Shannon; six grandchildren, Heather, Jacob, Luke, Bethany, Amber and Abigail; and five great-grandchildren.
Deceased are three brothers, Ray, Paul and Butch, and three sisters, Emma, Ora and a sister, who died in infancy.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 8, with Pastor David Webster officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Hickory.
