John S. Abbott
John S. Abbott, 72, of Richeyville, passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2018, in Transitions Healthcare of Washington, South Strabane Township.
He was born September 4, 1945, in Charleroi, a son of the late Edward W. and Ada D. McGinnis Abbott.
Mr. Abbott served as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1963 to 1967 as a radio operator in the infantry. For his service, he was awarded the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars and numerous citations.
He was employed by Centerville Borough on road maintenance for 20 years. He was previously employed by Volkswagen, New Stanton, on the assembly line and also owned and operated Abbott Electric as a residential electrician.
He was a former member of Beallsville-Centerville-Richeyville Lions Club, a member of Centerville American Legion Post 705, United Automobile Workers and a social member of Richeyville Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. Abbott enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, NASCAR, Steelers football, spending time with his family and was an advocate of union workers’ rights.
On November 25, 1966, he married Linda J. Shiflett, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Sherri Lacey (Raymond) of Deemston Borough, Christina Sowers (Jeremy) of Dry Tavern and Kimberly Abbott (Stephen Brezinski) of Richeyville; three grandchildren, Elizabeth and Victoria Lacey and Bodhi Sowers; three sisters, Dolores Lohr (Scrib) of Smithfield, Violet Tonielli (Joe) of Ottawa, Ill., and Selma Horton of Portsmouth, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, Carl and Edward Abbott.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, 2830 Main Street, Beallsville. At 1 p.m. Sunday, March 11, family and friends are asked to go directly to United Christian Church, 499 West Malden Drive, Coal Center, for a funeral service with the Rev. Darwin Collins officiating. Military rites will be accorded by Centerville American Legion Post 705. Interment will be private.
