Eleanor J. Chaney
Eleanor J. Chaney, 93, of New Freeport (Ned), passed away Monday, March 26, 2018, in Washington Hospital.
She was born June 21, 1924, in Lonaconing, Md., a daughter of the late Perry B. and Ella Jeffery Schramm. She attended Allegany High School in Lonaconing.
On December 12, 1953, in Cumberland, Md., she married Owen Chaney, who died December 1, 1997.
Mrs. Chaney was a homemaker. She also worked in manufacturing for Singer Sewing Machine Co., Kelly Springfield and Celanese Co., all in Cumberland. During World War II, she was a “Rosie the Riveter,” working in an ammunition factory.
She was an exceptional Christian. She loved to read her Bible and was a member of Grandview United Methodist Church, Garrison, where she sang in the choir. She enjoyed going to TOPS in Burton, W.Va.
Mrs. Chaney enjoyed cooking and baking gob cakes. Some of her favorite activities were gardening, bowling and dancing.
Surviving are two sons, Michael Chaney (Karen) and Edward Chaney, both of Ned; three daughters, Pat Bates (Bob) of Jefferson, Nancy Fordyce (Mark) of Ned and Mary Kiger (Eddie) of Holbrook; 10 grandchildren, Bobby Bates, Amanda Ealy, Sean, Dylan and Jesse Chaney, Erica Fordyce, Hannah Kibler, Mark Fordyce, Joshua Kiger and Jeremiah Kiger; 10 great-grandchildren, Luke and Keira Bates, Noah, Levi and Lilly Ealy, Thor and Jade Chaney, Audrey Kiger, Sheamus Phillips and Jaelyn Roupe; and a brother, Donald Schramm of Delmar, Del.
Deceased, in addition to her husband, are two granddaughters, Angela and Melissa Bates; great-granddaughter, Kacee Kibler; brother, Bob Schramm; and a sister, Norma Mooney.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 182 West High Street, Waynesburg, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 30, with Pastor Ben Williamson officiating. Interment will follow in Sand Hill Cemetery, New Freeport.
