Audrey W. Christman

Audrey W. Christman, 80, of Washington, died Wednesday, March 28, 2018.

She was born March 25, 1938, in New York City, N.Y., where she was raised on City Island by Elbert and Lucretia Ward.

Audrey graduated from Bronx High School of Science in 1955 and Bellevue School of Nursing in 1958. She moved to Washington from New York City with her husband and family in 1960. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in education from California State College and her master’s degree in guidance and counseling from West Virginia University.

On July 4, 1955, she married Walter L. Christman, who died January 3, 2012.

She served for several years as a nurse and night supervisor in Washington Hospital, before becoming a full-time mother to four children. She assisted her husband in the management of Christman Trucking, which operated local and over-the-road trucking, Christman Air Freight, Christman Air System, an air charter and commuter regional airline, and Travel Concepts, a travel agency. Along the way, she qualified as a single-engine aircraft pilot.

She was an avid quilter and her quilts were displayed in conventions across the nation in recent years. She was a member of Three Rivers Quilt Guild.

Mrs. Christman was a supporter of Hospice and American Red Cross. She was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and loved spending time in Myrtle Beach, S.C., with her husband and family.

Surviving are two sons, Walter L. (Odile Thao) Christman of Atascadero, Calif., and Mark S. (Joelene) Christman of Avella; two daughters, Wendy (Charlie) Williams of Charlotte, N.C., and Cheryl Dean of Cincinnati, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Laura (Adam) Lewis, Sean Christman, Kathryn (Ross) Cordio, Sarah Christman, Jason Dylan Williams, Casey Williams, Audrey Rizzo and Taylor and Cheyenne Christman; and a great-granddaughter, Jasmine Lewis.

Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday in Piatt & Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, with the Rev. Karen Stevenson officiating. Entombment will follow in Washington Cemetery Mausoleum.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Washington County Community Foundation, benefiting Walter Christman Family Fund, 1253 Rt. 519, P.O. Box 308, Eighty Four, PA 15330, or a charity of the donor’s choice in Audrey’s name.
