James W. Filby Sr.
James W. “Pappy” “Dick” Filby Sr., 94, of Washington, died Friday, May 11, 2018, in Transitions Healthcare, South Strabane Township.
He was born June 9, 1923, in Washington (Lincoln Hill), a son of the late Orville and Ethel Mae Fisher Filby.
Dick was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served in World War II.
He worked at Duncan Miller as a glass shaper, Pittsburgh Railways as an inspector, Nichols Bakery as a checker for 14 years and Crile Machine as a truck driver, from where he retired after 19 years. He owned and operated Filby’s Atlantic Station on Route 19 North.
Dick was a charter and life member of South Strabane Volunteer Fire Department No. 2 and a charter and life member of Good Sam’s Club.
On January 23, 1943, he married Mary Leona Camp, who died July 12, 2004.
Surviving are two sons, James W. (Donna) Filby Jr. of Houston and Floyd E. Filby of Waynesburg; a daughter, Mary Lee (Michael) Quinn of Washington; a brother, Robert Filby of the state of Washington; a sister, Mildred Smith of Tennessee; six grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Deceased are three brothers, John Filby, Orville Filby Jr. and David Filby, and three sisters, Mable Braner, Virginia Elliott and Betty Smith.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 14, with Pastor Rick Bruckner officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175. South Strabane Fire Department will hold a service at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to charity of the donor’s choice.
