John J. Golonka
John J. Golonka, 92, of Canonsburg, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 10, 2018, in Greenery Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, Canonsburg.
He was born April 5, 1926, in Slovan, a son of the late Frank and Valeria Drokak Golonka.
On August 25, 1951, he married his beloved wife Victoria M. Kosharsky, who passed away October 21, 2009.
Mr. Golonka was a military veteran, serving his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, Army Occupation Medal (Germany), American Theater Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and World War II Victory Ribbon. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191, Canonsburg.
Before retiring at age 57, he worked as a coal miner for Consol.
He was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Canonsburg. He had many interests, including hunting, fishing, gardening and attending polka dances.
Mr. Golonka was the last of his immediate family.
Surviving are his two sons, Kennth Golonka of Canonsburg and Lawrence Golonka (Kimrlee) of Franklin Park, and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to his parents and wife, are his brothers, Edward, Walter, Joseph, Thad and Raymond Golonka, and his sisters, Helen Losh, Wanda and Stella.
Friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services Inc., Joseph P. Salandra, LFD, owner/supervisor, Darla A. Tripoli, LFD, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, 724-745-8120, where departing prayers will begin at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 15. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, 317 West Pike Street, Canonsburg. Interment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Peters Township, with full military rites accorded by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 and the U.S. Army.
