Some knew her as “Chick,” while others called her “Cab,” but all who knew her will be sad to hear Helen Anderson Bonar, 93, of West Alexander, went home to be with her Lord Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in Southmont of Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington.

She was born August 18, 1925. She was one of 16 children born to William A. Grager and Grace E. Creighton in Tyrone.

She later moved to West Alexander, where she met, fell in love with and married her husband, Donald L. Anderson, September 7, 1945. Together, until his death in 1970, Helen and Donald raised four wonderfully loving boys, Donald, Robert, Charles and James. She then married Chester “Dink” Bonar on April 8, 1971. Chick and Dink spent nearly 23 years of marriage going on adventures throughout the United States.

Helen was well-known for her homemade noodles and the cherry, peach and coconut cream pies she made for various community bake sales. She was also known for singing karaoke, singing in the choir at First Christian Church of West Alexander and working at Thrift Drug Store in Franklin Mall in Washington and Cherokee Trading Post in Dallas Pike, W.Va. Helen even baked one of her famous coconut cream pies for Frank Sinatra while visiting family in California.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; many of her siblings; her son, Donald; daughter-in-law Cynthia Anderson; and grandson-in-law David Carroll.

She will be sadly missed by her sisters, Evelyn Burns and Jean Grager; her sons, Robert (Joyce), Charles and James (Annie) Anderson; daughter-in-law Becky Anderson; seven grandchildren, Heidi Carroll, Stacy (Kelley) Vanderbilt, Philip (Christina) Anderson, Kelly (Ali) Yalfani, Lyndsey Anderson, Kara (Mike) Mayo and Kelsey (Michael) Johnson; seven great-grandchildren, Megan, Sydney and Finley Carroll, Nolan Anderson, Alex Yalfani and Sawyer and Lily Johnson; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to noon, the time of service, Saturday, November 10, in Hummell and Jones Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. Interment will follow in West Alexander Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to Hummell and Jones Funeral Home, Thomas W. Hummell, supervisor, Douglas M. Jones, director.
