Elizabeth J. Johns

Elizabeth J. “Betty” Johns, 92, of Washington, formerly of Ruffs Dale, died Tuesday, October 2, 2018, in Hawthorne Woods Assisted Living, Washington.

She was born March 19, 1926, in Versailles, a daughter of the late Ernest and Grace Fulton Oden.

Mrs. Johns was a graduate of South Huntingdon High School. She went on to earn a bachelor of science degree in biology and attended graduate courses at University of Pittsburgh.

She was employed as a chemistry and physics teacher at Hempfield Area High School, from where she retired in 1993.

On June 1, 1949, in Donora, she married William C. Johns, who died March 24, 1975.

Surviving are two sons, W. David Johns of West Reading and Robert (Kate) Johns of Kennett Square; two daughters, Pamela (Terry) Kushner of Washington and Liz (Darryl) Strobel of Pittsburgh; two sisters, Marie Forejt of Ruffs Dale and Martha Brosh of Mt. Pleasant; six grandchildren, Kristen Hansen, Drew Kushner, Jennifer, Lauren and Sarah Johns and Cori Silvestain; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased is a brother, George Oden.

Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 4, in Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. All other services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to University of Pittsburgh College of Arts and Sciences, 139 University Place, Pittsburgh, PA 15260, or to Washington Area Humane Society at www.washingtonpashelter.org.
