Arthur R. Talpas

Arthur R. Talpas, 90, of Canonsburg, passed away peacefully Sunday, October 7, 2018, in his daughter’s home, surrounded by his family.

He was born April 3, 1928, in Strabane, a son of Martin and Verona Hostinsky Talpas, who are deceased.

On May 20, 1950, he married Dorothy Sohyda, who passed away July 25, 2004.

He was a veteran, serving his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Arthur had a strong work ethic and always provided for his family. He was employed at Forbes Steel as a steelworker until his retirement. He also sold Fuller Brushes for many years.

Mr. Talpas was a faithful member of Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Church in McKeesport, where he served as president of the church.

He had many hobbies and interests, which included playing softball and pool with his buddies. He was a member of SNPJ and enjoyed polkas.

Arthur is survived by his children, Gary Talpas (Pam) of Canonsburg, Darrell Talpas (Tammy) of Freemont, Ohio, Mark Talpas (Carol) of Stafford, Va., Nina Strickland (Mike) of Knoxville, Tenn., and Ksenia Kwasniewski (Gordon) of Burgettstown; a sister, Margaret Banish of Houston; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, deceased are a sister, Helen Gonglik, and brothers Edward, John, Martin and Joseph Talpas.

Friends are welcome from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services Inc., Joseph P. Salandra, LFD, owner/supervisor, Darla A. Tripoli, LFD, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, 724-745-8120, where a Parastas service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 11, in St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, 601 Boone Avenue, Canonsburg, with Archpriest Father Dimitri D. Ermakov officiating. Anyone wishing to attend the funeral service is asked to meet at the church. Interment will follow in Oak Spring Cemetery, Oak Spring Road, Canonsburg, where full military rites will be accorded by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Building Fund at Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Church, 330 Shaw Avenue, McKeesport, PA 15132.
