Robert Ralph Simpson
Robert Ralph Simpson, 100, of Washington, died Thursday, October 11, 2018, in Evergreen Assisted Living, in the loving presence of his grandson, Christopher, and in the arms of his daughter, Barbara.
He was born April 18, 1918, in Ellsworth, Iowa, a son of the late Robert Gilkey Simpson and Ethel Richardson Simpson.
Bob attended Shadyside Academy, Oakmont High School and Iowa State University, where he met his wife, Reva Reynolds.
The Simpson family made their home in Oakmont, close to Oakland, where his father was a professor at University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Institute of Technology (Carnegie Mellon). With a stay-at-home mother and father as a professor, his life with his family was rich with knowledge, sports, music and good food.
Bob spent his entire working life in the glass industry, moving from Atlanta, Ga., to Washington, where he and his family made their home. He was plant manger for Knox Glass and Continental Can, before retiring from Brockway Plant No. 11.
Bob adored his family and treasured time with them, especially the annual family trips to Stone Harbor, N.J.
An athlete who loved sports, he played basketball and was a kicker for Iowa State. Above all, he loved golf, which he learned while working as a caddy at Oakmont Country Club.
An honorary and oldest member of Washington Golf Club, he was also a member of Lone Pine Country Club, Rotary Club and City Council. He earned the distinction of being the oldest living person to caddy for a U.S. Open at Oakmont. He also enjoyed watching college football.
With a wealth of knowledge and attention to details, Bob was generous and a natural caretaker. If anyone needed anything, he would make sure they got it. He will be remembered for his mischievous grin and for being quite a joker.
His daughter and caretaker will miss him dearly.
