Mary Catherine Scott Klages

Mary Catherine Scott Klages, 83, of Independence, passed away Sunday, October 14, 2018, in UPMC-Montefiore hospital, Pittsburgh, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born June 4, 1935, in Taylorstown, a daughter of the late William Newton and Eleanor Mae Mehaffey Scott.

Mrs. Klages was a 1953 graduate of Claysville High School and lived in Independence for the past 60 years.

Mary Catherine was a homemaker and devoted mother to her four children. She was a dedicated member of Independence United Methodist Church and enjoyed all church activities.

Mrs. Klages was an avid reader, who loved to cook and bake for her family, especially at the holidays. She loved to spend time with family, particularly her grandchildren, whom she babysat over the years.

On June 30, 1956, in Taylorstown, she married Wayne Clifford Klages, who died March 14, 2006.

Surviving Mrs. Klages are three sons, Kevin “Stretch” Klages and wife Linda of Wellsburg, W.Va., Keith “Sluggo” Klages and wife Karen of Avella and Kenneth Klages and wife Terri of Burgettstown; a daughter, Sheila Dow and husband Neal of Canonsburg; six grandchildren, Zachary, Kenneth Jr. and Brandon Klages, Karalee Noga, Alexis (Robert) Campbell and Brianna Dow; a great-grandchild, Rosemary; sisters-in-law Patricia Scott and Diane Scott; and several nieces and nephews.

She was the last of her immediate family. Deceased, in addition to her husband and parents, are her twin brothers, Robert and William Scott.

Friends and family will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Jerome A. Stefkovich Funeral Home Inc., 18 Campbell Street, Avella. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 19, in Independence United Methodist Church, with Pastor Bonnie Gilbert officiating. Everyone is asked to meet at the church Friday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery, Avella.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Independence United Methodist Church or to a local charity of the donor’s choice.
