William G. Dinsmore
William G. Dinsmore, 90, of Hickory, died peacefully Monday, September 3, 2018, in Strabane Woods, South Strabane Township.
He was born December 9, 1927, a son of the late John C. and Ethel L. Dinsmore.
He was preceded in death by his wife, whom he married May 20, 1952. Norma passed away 21 years ago on May 11, 1997.
Mr. Dinsmore was a 1945 graduate of Hickory High School and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, proudly serving during World War II.
After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Air Corps and attended Yale University for six months. He transferred to the Naval Training Station at Great Lakes. William served aboard a naval oil tanker until his discharge in August 1946. He then attended Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics, receiving his license in engine and aircraft mechanics.
Mr. Dinsmore worked for the North American Aircraft Plant in Los Angeles for three years, until he returned to Hickory and ran the family farm for almost 50 years.
He was a member of Hickory United Evangelical Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder for many years. He sang in the choir until last November and was known for telling a joke before choir started each week.
Mr. Dinsmore served as president and vice president of Washington County Farm Bureau and National Farmers Union for many years.
He enjoyed listening to classical music, bowling, word search puzzles and being a steward of the soil.
William is survived by his four children, Wanda Jean (Douglas) McDowell, Loretta Ellen (Robert) McMahon, William L. (Cathleen) Dinsmore and John C. (Deborah) Dinsmore; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, with one on the way; and sister Bettie Dallmeyer.
Deceased is a sister, Elsie Clarke.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Additional visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of services, Friday, September 7, in Hickory United Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 210 Main Street, Hickory, with lay pastor Lou Templeton officiating.
