Robert Harley Phillips
Robert Harley Phillips, 93, died peacefully Sunday, June 24, 2018, in his home in Coarsegold, Calif.
He was born December 9, 1924, the fifth of 12 children born to the late Mr. A.B. Phillips and Celeste Moore Phillips of Marianna.
Surviving are his wife, Sandy; children Sharman Viney of Glendale, Ariz., Margot Cariveau (Curtis) of Manteca, Calif., Lynn Wilson of Bay Point, Calif., and Marici Reid (Robin) of Independence, Ore.; stepsons Bob Doering of Medford, Ore., and Glen Doering of Visalia, Calif.; grandchildren Bret Viney, Tristenne Viney, Jesse Cariveau, Jennifer Akagi (Rob), Reed Wilson (Jenica), Robert Reid, Jonathan Reid, Mezra Kerr, Andrew Doering, Phillip Doering and Lucy Doering; and multiple great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Pauline Shuman, Bonnie (Don) Phillips and Rose Mary Friend; a brother, the Rev. Carl (Ruth) Phillips; and many nieces, nephews and their extended families.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a granddaughter, Brean Doering; brothers Clarence, Ronald, Homer and Benjamin Phillips; and sisters Edith Shrontz, Jessie Phillips and Janice Forney.
Robert was a graduate of West Bethlehem High School in Marianna.
He always knew he would go to sea, and he did. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II, serving from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic and the Pacific.
He worked for Standard Oil and Chevron Corp. for more than 40 years, a career that took him around the world, building tankers in Denmark and Japan and returning to sea as chief engineer.
He was an inventor, musician, builder, farmer when growing up and gifted singer with Reno Opera. He loved to serve his fellow man, volunteering many skills and hours with church thrift stores and the Gideons. He was always available to help people out when needed.
A celebration of Robert’s amazing life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 22, in Highland Brethren Church, Marianna.
