Melvin E. Haines
Melvin E. Haines, 85, of Dilliner, passed away Sunday, September 23, 2018, in Latrobe Hospital, following a brief illness.
Born September 13, 1933, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Edna Niner and Carl Haines Sr.
A 1951 graduate of Point Marion High School, he honorably served for 27 years in the U.S. Army, retiring as a sergeant first class, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Moose Lodge. For many years, he was well-known throughout the area for owning and operating Haines Beer Distributing and Trucking Co. in Dilliner, and was affectionately known by all as “Uncle Mel.”
He was predeceased by his first wife of 43 years, Roberta Svoboda Haines in 1996, and by a brother, Larry.
Surviving are his three sons, Noel, Troy and Cody Haines; seven daughters, Melody Billetz, Robin Merti, Kennedy Statler, Tracey Horvwalt, Donna Chory, Maria Guesman and Christa Lowther; 20 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Carl Haines Jr. and Dana Haines. Also surviving are his wife, Judith Casteel Haines, and her family.
Friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Richard R. Herod Funeral Home, Point Marion. A funeral service of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, Bobtown. Guests should come directly to the church. Interment with military rites by Point Marion veterans posts will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Fairchance. Vigil service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mel’s name may be offered to Greene County Humane Society, 183 Jefferson Road, Waynesburg, PA 15370.
