It is with great sadness that her family must announce the passing of Mary Malinowski, 93, of Canonsburg, who passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2019.

She was born February 22, 1926, at the family home in Slovan and was the eldest daughter of the late Mike Stiak (Mile Shijan), a Serbian immigrant, and Anna Rock Stiak, a Serbian-American.

Mary attended Union High School in Burgettstown. Following high school, she worked at a small grocery store in Slovan where she met the love of her life, Edward Malinowski, whom she married October 11, 1945. They resided in Canonsburg, where they raised their son, Ed. They had a great life together: she, a stay at home wife and mother and he, a meat cutter and store manager for Giant Eagle Markets. They were married for 49 years at the time of her husband’s passing in 1995.

Mary, as well as her husband, were well known as excellent cooks. She especially excelled at baking pies, cakes and holiday cookies and nut rolls. In addition to cooking, she enjoyed reading biographies and histories, playing 500 Bid with her card club, bird watching, playing euchre, watching football and listening to polkas and Serbian music. She was a lifelong member of Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church. In addition, she was an avid bowler and a member of a bowling league for well over 30 years, where she won numerous trophies. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, and especially enjoyed caring for and doting over her grandchildren, Melissa, Ed, and Matt. Surviving are her son, Ed (Marilyn) Malinowski of Chartiers Twp.; a granddaughter, Melissa Merante (Jason) of Gibsonia; a grandson, Ed (Jamie) Malinowski of Valencia; and a grandson Matt (Nicole) of Las Vegas, Nev. Additionally, she is survived by many nephews, nieces and cousins. Mary, “Ga Ga,” always felt blessed to have known and been a part of the lives of her two great-grandchildren, Eva and Joey Merante, who also survive her.

Finally, in addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, George Stiak; her sisters, Daisy Slopek, Helen Tosic and Dorothy Rencheck; and her half-sisters, Darlene Yaworsky and Georgia Wurtz.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Sollon Funeral and Cremation Services LTD, 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, Phillip L. Sollon, supervisor, J. David Sollon, director,724-746-1000.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 4, in the funeral home, with interment following in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.
