Betty Gobleck

Betty Gobleck, 88, a lifelong resident of Cherry Valley, passed away Friday afternoon, December 6, 2019.

She was born July 3, 1931, a daughter of the late Roman and Antonina Mayer.

A 1949 graduate of the Union High School in Burgettstown, she worked for Mary’s Bakery in Pittsburgh for many years before retiring from Petrucci’s Market in Burgettstown, where she worked in the bakery department.

She was a lifelong and active member of her church, Central Assembly of God, in Houston. She enjoyed baking and cooking for her family and friends.

Her first husband, Private First Class John Kortyna Jr., was killed in action while serving in the U.S. Army in Korea on October 14, 1951. She later married Frank Dominick Gobleck, who passed away August 3, 1976.

She is survived by her four children, Frank Gobleck of Cherry Valley, Gary Kortyna and wife Deb of Arizona, Nancy DeSantis and husband Jim of Colorado and Jane Cowden of Kennedy Township; six grandchildren, Jim DeSantis, Karen Heffelfinger and husband Howard, Ken Cowden, Michael Cowden and wife Caroline, Brian Mitchell and wife Katie and Lauren Echols and husband Matt; and six great-grandchildren, Lucy and Belle Heffelfinger, Jackson and Caroline Echols, Liam Mitchell and Jack Cowden.

She is also survived by her sister-in-laws, Ruth Gobleck, wife of the late Domenick, and Joanne Kortyna Mondin; nieces Cindy Nicola and husband Bill, Lauren Gobleck and husband Anthony, Ally Tagliaferro and husband Anthony and Shirley Diamond and husband Nick; and many other nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to her parents and husbands, are her brother, Joseph Mayer; three sisters, Mary Hellman, Julia Chappel and Helen Brooks; a niece, Jean Scruppi; and two nephews, Bob Mayer and Greg Scruppi.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Lee & Martin Funeral Home, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown, PA 15021, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 12, with Pastors Kurt Jenkins and David Warnock of Central Assembly of God Church officiating. She will be laid to rest in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Burgettstown.

If so desired, her family suggests memorial donations be made in her memory to Central Assembly of God Church, 155 McGovern Road, Houston, PA 15342.
