Earl E. Newman, 102, of Carmichaels, passed away on February 9, 2019, at an assisted living facility in Verona. He was the son of the late George and Bertha Myers Newman.

Earl grew up in Greene and Fayette counties and graduated from German Township High School. During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and served as a technical sergeant maintaining airplanes in the South Pacific. He met the love of his life, Evelyn, near the end of the war and they were married in 1945. After he was discharged from the Army Air Force, they moved to Uniontown and then to Carmichaels in about 1948. Earl initially worked as a mechanic in local coal mines and retired in 1978 from the position of General Maintenance Foreman at the U.S. Steel’s Robena No. 3 Mine. He remained in generally good health and played his last round of golf at age 95. Until the last few years, he enjoyed traveling, playing golf, riding a motorcycle, boating, playing chess, and spending time with his wife and family. He won his last chess game with his son a few days before he died. He is remembered by those who knew him as an honest, hard-working, and considerate man who was very bright and had excellent problem-solving abilities.

Earl recently lost Evelyn, to whom he was married for over 73 years. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Betty and Johnetta; and by his brothers, Myers, Ralph, and Ray. Surviving are his son, Barry (Diane) of Monroeville; his granddaughter, Leslie of Plum Borough; and his grandson, Bryan (Nicole) and great-grandchildren, Alex and Charlie, of Plum Borough. In addition, he is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, primarily in California, Illinois, and Virginia.

Entombment will take place at the mausoleum at Greene County Memorial Park, Waynesburg, following a private ceremony for the immediate family. The arrangements and services were entrusted to the Yoskovich Funeral Home, 724-966-5500, Martin J. Yoskovich, Funeral Director, 300 South Vine Street, Carmichaels.
