Carl D. “Bub” Gunnerson, 81, of Washington, died Monday, February 18, 2019, in UPMC-Mercy hospital, Pittsburgh.

He was born October 23, 1937, in Butler, a son of the late Carl E. and June Thompson Gunnerson.

He was a 1956 graduate of Washington High School.

Carl was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Berlin Crisis and served as an MP in Germany for two years.

Mr. Gunnerson was a member of Washington Alliance Church, where he held various offices for many years, including assistant treasurer and deacon. He also enjoyed attending small group Bible study and singing in the Washington Alliance Church Choir and the Men’s Quartet.

Mr. Gunnerson worked for many years in inside sales in the electrical field, before retiring from Tristate Supply.

Carl volunteered at Washington Area Humane Society for 20 years and at Washington Christian Outreach for 15 years.

In the early 1960s, he coached boy’s basketball at 6th Ward Grade School. He loved softball, and he ran the Washington Alliance Church Softball League for 34 years. In 2008, at age 75, he had to retire from playing softball, which lead to him coaching and umpiring. In 2018, for his many contributions to ASA of PA, District 7, Washington County Softball, for over 50 years as a player, umpire and League Commissioner, he was enshrined on the Wall of Honor in the ASA of PA Hall of Fame.

Carl enjoyed the fish fries held at the various churches during the Lent season. However, one of his greatest joys was attending his grandchildrens’ band performances and Bible quiz meets.

On September 11, 1965, he married Karen Lee Kosey, who survives. This past September, they celebrated 53 years of marriage.

Also surviving are two daughters, Tracy Lynne (Darrin) Barber of Bethel Park and Karla Sue (Adam) Taylor of Washington; four grandchildren, Lindsey Barber, Jordan Barber, Emma Taylor and Ethan Taylor; two nieces, Darla Barney and Jana Palmer; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and two great-great nieces.
