James L. McCullough
James L. McCullough, 95, of Washington, died Tuesday, March 19, 2019, in his home.
He was born February 1, 1924, in Deerlick, a son of the late William and Mabel Conger McCullough, and was the last of his family of 10.
Mr. McCullough was a member of East Buffalo Presbyterian Church, where he served as elder, clerk of session, director of Vacation Bible School and taught Sunday school.
He was a 1942 graduate of Trinity High School. He went on to receive his bachelor of science degree from Waynesburg College in 1950 and his master of education degree from University of Pittsburgh in 1955.
Mr. McCullough taught in Chartiers-Houston School District for 35 years as an elementary and middle school classroom and science teacher and served as a principal at Crossroads and Houston Elementary schools.
He enjoyed gardening, golfing, bowling and dartball.
Mr. McCullough was a member of National Education Association, Pennsylvania State Education Association, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, Senior Bowling League of Washington, many golf leagues and Washington County Church Dartball League, as well as Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion.
Mr. McCullough served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943 until his discharge with the rank of weapons technician first class in 1946. He participated in the invasion of Normandy, aboard the destroyer escort USS Bates and in the Pacific, aboard the USS Barnwell troop transport. He also served during the Korean conflict.
On August 6, 1949, in Washington, he married Winona Mounts. Mrs. McCullough died December 30, 2011.
Surviving are a son, David L. McCullough of Beaver; daughter Jane M. McCullough of Pittsburgh; two grandchildren, Eli James McCullough and Emma Rose McCullough; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are four brothers, John, Frank, Allen and William McCullough; five sisters, Eva Mankey, Mary Weir, Jean Ghrist Lunebring, Lucille Skeen and Olive Sedlak; three nephews; and a niece.
Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday in Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 25, in East Buffalo Presbyterian Church, 180 East Buffalo Church Road, Washington, PA 15301, with Pastor Linda Mankey officiating. Interment will follow in Claysville Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion.
