Frances Iva Swihart
Frances Iva Swihart, 96, of Washington, passed from this world into glory Saturday, October 26, 2019, in Southmont of Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington.
She was born May 15, 1923, one of 15 children of Adda Ewing Berdine and Newton Arthur Berdine.
After grade school, she worked as a domestic in the Conner and Booth homes. She then worked as a salesclerk at G. C. Murphy’s in Washington until her marriage to Charles Sheldon “Chick” Swihart. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage. After she married, she and Chick worked together on the family dairy farm in Amity. They also raised chickens and pigs and had a large garden and apple, peach and cherry trees. The vegetables and fruit were sold at their farm stand on Route 19 near their home. They also raised a family of six children on the farm in the country sunshine.
Frances enjoyed doing crafts of all kinds, especially plastic canvas. She also enjoyed word finds. She was an avid collector of salt and pepper shakers and enjoyed tending her flowers and shopping.
Mrs. Swihart was a member of Nazarene Church in Waynesburg.
Surviving are five children, Iva Jane Verner and Charles (Patrice) Swihart of Amity, Sylvia (Eric) Johnson and Raymond (Kathy) Swihart of Washington and Dennis (Vicki) Swihart of Jefferson, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Swihart of Mt. Vernon, Mo.; 15 grandchildren, Coral (Jim) Bryja, Amy (Doug) Wilson, Mark (Phyllis) Hoge, Karen Logan, Kathleen Verner, Michael (Kathleen) Verner, Kevin Johnson, Tina (Ben) Hines, Ryan (Addison) Johnson, Nickki (Dan) Kennedy, Christopher (Rachel) Swihart, Crystal Shubert, Jason (Jenna) Swihart, Audrey Lazzaro and Clint Swihart; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy (David) Rist of Baytown, Texas.
Deceased, in addition to her parents and husband, are a son, Larry Robert Swihart; two great-granddaughters, Alivia Dawn Johns and Sadie Johnson; six sisters, Margaret Berdine, Nellie Whipple, Ruth Fisher, Hazel Thompson, Jean Berdine and Helen Hamilton; four brothers, Glen “Bud,” Albert “Abe,” Howard “Tub” and Harold “Peewee” Berdine; along with two infant brothers and an infant sister.
Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the time of service, Friday, November 1, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, with the Rev. Laura Saffell officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.
