Robert E. Armstrong

Robert E. Armstrong, 88, passed away peacefully at home September 1, 2019. He was born March 27, 1931, in Claysville, to James “Bill” and Nancy Miller Armstrong.

He graduated from Claysville High School in 1949. The following year he joined the military and served in the Korean War. He continued on to work for Columbia Gas and Mellon Bank, retiring from both careers. On June 9, 1956, he married Marilyn Crane. They had one son, Timothy Armstrong of Canonsburg, and a daughter, Melissa (Mike) Henderson of Claysville; two granddaughters, Breanna (Richard) Trybend and Amanda (Joshua) O’Neill.

Robert was a lifetime member and post commander of American Legion Post #639. He loved to dance and spent a lot of his time organizing the many dances held over the years. There was nothing he enjoyed more than spending time with his two granddaughters, who cherished him more than anything. His pastimes included working on crossword puzzles and watching his favorite shows. A graveside military service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 14, at Claysville Cemetery. Donations in his name can be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
