Sophie Onufer
Sophie Onufer, 90, of North Charleroi, passed away Saturday, December 5, 2020, in her home. She was born in Monessen August 24, 1930, a daughter of John and Mary Cibera Gulya.
Sophie was retired from the former Corning Glass in Charleroi. She was Orthodox by faith. Sophie had a reputation for her excellent baking and was well known for her halupki. Sophie was a fun-loving person who enjoyed cooking, gardening and polkas, but most of all she loved spending time with her family.
Surviving are four daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra (John) Timko of Rostraver Township, Gloria (Rick) Bizick of Canonsburg, Karen (Joe) Niro of Rostraver Township and Bonnie (Paul) Brand of Carroll Township; 11 grandchildren, Sophia Brand, Amelia Brand, Joelle (Dale) Fisher, Jocelyn Niro (fiance Chris Nelson), Jillian Niro (fiance Brendan DelBianco), Richard Bizick, Brendan Bizick (fiancee Krystina Litton), Briana (Chris) Fontana, John A. (Jessica) Timko, Jordan (Becky) Timko, Jessalyn Timko (fiance Luke Ecimovic); and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Hora of Rostraver and Wilma Koday of Donora; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Andrew Gulya, John (Jay) Gulya, George (Giggie) Gulya and Charles Gulya; and four sisters, Mary (Marie) Harley, Ann Dimonde, Catherine Gulya (her twin sister who died at birth), and infant sister Margaret Gulya; and her former husband, John Onufer Jr.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 9, with Parastas at 4 p.m. in Melenyzer Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, Inc., 825 Fallowfield Avenue, Charleroi, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, December 10, with the Rev. Gregory Peterson officiating. Interment will follow at Monongahela Cemetery.
