Billy Thomas
Billy Jackson Thomas, 91, of Waynesburg, died at 5:11 a.m., Thursday, January 30, 2020, in Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va.
He was born Monday, April 2, 1928, in New Freeport, a son of the late Asa F. Thomas and Maude Roberts Thomas.
Mr. Thomas was a member of the Church of Christ in Washington. He was a member of the Waynesburg Masonic Lodge 153 Free and Accepted Masons, and was a 32 degree Mason with the Consistory of Pittsburgh. He was also a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association Teacher Association, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Carmichaels and the Waynesburg Moose Lodge 461. Mr. Thomas was a veteran having served with the United States Army 11th Airborne, during WWII in the Pacific Theater of operation. He worked for RG Johnson Company as a hoist operator for several years. For 30 years he taught school in the Central Greene School District retiring in 1991.
His wife, Phyllis Grooms Thomas, whom he married on January 24, 1952 died December 17, 1995.
Surviving are a daughter, Tanya (Joseph) Briand of Albuquerque, N.M.; a son, Joey B. Thomas of Waynesburg; five grandchildren, Dustin Stewart, Tara Ruiz, Jessi Sandoval, Jacquelyn Wright, and Joshua Thomas; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Thomas was the last of his immediate family.
Deceased are two sisters, Mary Ruth Huffman and Grace Haught, and four brothers, Edward Thomas, Ralph Thomas, Earl Thomas, and Dennis A. Thomas.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 5, in Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home, Inc. Daryl L. Throckmorton owner/director, 197 North Maiden Street, Waynesburg, PA 15370, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 6, with the Rev. William Parker officiating.
