John W. “Unko” Kadash

John W. “Unko” Kadash, 90, of Bentleyville, formerly of Ellsworth, passed away Tuesday, January 7, 2020, in Mon Valley Hospital.

He was born August 26, 1929, in Phillipsburg, a son of the late Eleanor Kadash.

John was a 1947 graduate of Ellsworth High School.

Mr. Kadash was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean conflict.

He was employed as an underground coal miner for Bethlehem Mines Corp., working in Mine 51, Mine 60 and Wilson Shop, and retiring in 1991 with 41 years of service.

He was a lifelong member of St. Katharine Drexel Parish, Bentleyville campus, and a charter member of Knights of Columbus Council 5826, St. George Croatian Fraternal Union 354, Cokeburg, and the Bentleyville American Legion Post 165.

John enjoyed hunting, fishing and, most of all, polka dancing.

On June 28, 1958, he married Shirley Ann Kubitza Kadash, who survives. They celebrated 61 years of marriage.

Surviving are three children, Deborah Pompermayer (Roger) of Finleyville, Yvonne Ruffing (Steve) of Virginia Beach, Va., and John Kadash Jr. (Kimberly) of Bentleyville; seven grandchildren, Justin McKeta, Jim Fidazzo, Ariel and Zack Kadash and Sarah, Alex and Laura Ruffing; four great-grandchildren, Cassidy, Colby and Cailyn McKeta and Bella Fidazzo; a sister, Betty Shanahan of Bentleyville; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Greenlee Funeral Home, 619 Main Street, Bentleyville, where prayers will be said at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, January 11, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Katharine Drexel Parish, Bentleyville campus, with the Rev. Don Chortos officiating. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, with full graveside military rites accorded by Bentleyville American Legion Post 165 and the U.S. Army. Knights of Columbus Council 5826 will recite the Rosary.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Bentleyville American Legion, 500 Main Street, Bentleyville, PA 15314.
