Robert “Bob” Johnson, 70, of Washington, died from complications related to Parkinson’s disease on May 5, 2020, in Premiere Washington Health Center.

Bob was born July 24, 1949, in Washington, the son of Sylvester “Curly” and Ruth Staley Johnson; and brother of William “Bill” Johnson (all deceased).

If you had the pleasure of meeting Bob, you probably liked him. If you had the pleasure of spending more time with Bob, you definitely loved him. Bob was one of us – he graduated from Trinity High School, served his country as a military policeman in the Air Force (stationed in England and Turkey), raised his family in Washington and owned and operated Hillside Paving, Inc. for more than 30 years. While you read this, you may be standing on a driveway or parking lot that he paved, or are complaining about a speed bump that he made.

Far more importantly, Bob was a loyal and loving husband, married to Hilary for nearly 48 years (whom he met while stationed in England), and a caring father to his boys, Dale and Jeremy. He loved his family with passion. On Fridays, he danced with his wife in the kitchen and serenaded her with songs by the Temptations. For his sons, he never missed a soccer, baseball or basketball game. He stood on the sideline and cheered, with his hat bill perfectly curled, jeans covered in grease and dirt under his fingernails. He loved to hunt, fish and scuba-dive, cheering for the Steelers and drinking good cold beer.

Later in life, Bob was blessed with five grandchildren, Jillian, Claire and Reese to Dale and his wife Margaret, and Emma and Sydney to Jeremy and his wife Alison. His grandchildren, who referred to him as “Papa” or “Big Papa,” loved him dearly.

Near the end of his life, he was loved and cared for by his wife Hilary and by the dedicated staffs at Allegheny General Hospital, Washington Hospital and Premier Washington Health Center. The family appreciates the professionalism and kindness Bob’s caregivers provided along with the tremendous support from family and friends.

Due to present restrictions, a Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to the McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, 27 Cherry Avenue, Houston, PA 15342.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to the Chartiers Township Volunteer Fire Department.

Condolences may be left by viewing the obituary at www.mcilvaine-speakman.com.
