Thomas Edwin Welsh
Thomas Edwin Welsh, 93, of Washington, passed away Saturday, August 7, 2021, in the Donnell House.
He was born July 28, 1928, in Washington, a son of the late Thomas Edison and Hester Agnes Mercer Welsh.
On July 28, 1950, he married Sarah Marie Earliwine, who survives, and celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary and his birthday 10 days prior to his death.
Thomas was a 1946 graduate of Chartiers High School. He was a life-long farmer and also drove a school bus for the Chartiers-Houston and McGuffey school districts, and lumber trucks for Al Lorenzi and 84 Lumber Companies.
Mr. Welsh attended Cross Roads Presbyterian Church, where he served as congregational chairman, and was an elder at the North Buffalo and Third United Presbyterian churches.
Tom served as a 4H leader and was president of the Washington County Extension Association. He served four years on the Washington County Fair Board and also served as beef superintendent.
He was employed as farm manager for Green Cove Farm, which raised registered Hereford and then Charolais cattle and oversaw the largest registered Yorkshire herd in the state at that time, as well as a flock of sheep.
As farm manager, he exhibited beef cattle at local county fairs, the PA Farm Show, Eastern National, North American Livestock Exhibition, Chicago International and Kansas City American Royal. During his tenure as manager, Green Cove Farm also received the Washington County Soil Conservation Award.
Tom loved to sing and dance and would regularly attend the Policeman’s and Charity Balls. He sang in church choirs and performed at many weddings. In his youth, he performed in barber shop quartet competitions. Later in life, he developed a passion for restoring and repairing old mantel clocks. He looked forward to watching the Steelers each week and was proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mr. Welsh is survived by his loving wife, Marie; four sons, Thomas P. (Rachel) of Burgettstown, Mark E. (Sandra) of Claysville, Daniel C. (Sophia) of Vancouver, B.C., and Scott A. (Joni Earley) of Washington; one daughter, Laura A. Male of New Kensington; 12 grandchildren, Niki (Mark) Ryburn, Justin (Jessica) Welsh, Emily (Paul) Reihner, Rachel (Mike) Klick, Sarah (Jacob) White, Emerson Welsh, Matteo Welsh, Jordan Welsh, Steven (Summer) Male, Keith Male, Katelyn Blosser and Corey Blosser; and 13 great-grandchildren, Ella, Cora and Brooks Welsh, Blake and Collin Reihner, Sydney, Evan and Savannah Klick, Noah and Eden White, Landon and Chase Welsh, and Willow Male.
Deceased are two daughters who died in infancy, Nila Marie and Cynthia Diane; two sisters, Lola and Miriam Welsh; three brothers, Robert (in infancy), Wayne and Jim Welsh; and one son-in-law, Christopher Male.
Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 11, in the Hummell and Jones Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, Douglas M. Jones, supervisor, Dr. Lawrence K. Donovan, director, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 12, with Michael Klick officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery.
