John Leroy Hunter
John “Lee” Leroy Hunter, 74, of Washington, left this earth unexpectedly, while vacationing in Montana, Tuesday, August 10, 2021. Lee was born July 5, 1947, in Washington, to deceased parents John Hanlin and Mary Louise Taggart Hunter.
He graduated from Avella High School and West Virginia University with a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture. He entered the Marines after graduating from WVU. Coming home from his military service during the Vietnam War, he went to work on the family farm.
On November 24, 1972, he married Karen Elaine Vorhes in Washington. This union produced four boys, Ronald Lee, Mark Eugene, James Douglas and John Robert.
Over the years, he worked in a variety of jobs including farming, security, cleaning, with a few of his boys at their respective places of employment, but mostly drove a bus for a variety of Washington County school districts.
Although he was a man of few words, he was extremely active in a variety of church activities and volunteer opportunities. He was a long-standing member of the Washington Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, but could be found at any church function that his children attended or invited him to. Lee was always willing to lend a hand to help someone move or give a ride to anywhere they needed to go. He passed this generous time-giving gift onto his boys and instilled in them great faith.
Lee leaves behind sons James Hunter of Washington, John (Julee) Hunter of Helena, Mont.; brother Kenneth Hunter of North Carolina; sisters Joyce (Robert) Anderson of Washington, Donna Hunter of Lexington, Mass., Carolyn (Michael) Molnar of Avella and Arlene (David) Gelles of Windber; and several nieces, nephews and many in-laws.
Proceeding him in death were his wife, Karen; son Ronald; and entering into glory on the same day, son Mark, while at home.
There will be a celebration of life service at a future date.
