Joyce M. Johnston

Joyce M. Johnston, 92, of Waynesburg, died at 11:45 p.m. Thursday, August 26, 2021, in the McMurray Hills Manor Nursing Home in Canonsburg.

She was born Wednesday, October 17, 1928, in Brave, a daughter of the late Charles E. Moore and Lessie Pearle Porter Moore. Mrs. Johnston spent her entire life in Greene County.

Mrs. Johnston was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Waynesburg. She attended Center Township High School for two years and graduated in 1946 from Waynesburg High School.

She had served on the Washington District Council on Ministries. Joyce was the former chairperson of the Waynesburg Sub-District United Methodist Women and had served as vice president of the Washington District United Methodist Women. She was a certified United Methodist Lay Speaker since 1970 and served as the Oak Forest United Methodist Church pastor from 1980 to1987.

She was the secretary of the American Cancer Society from 1985 to 1987. Joyce was the title searcher in the Waynesburg office of Mary K. Pruss of Peacock and Keller from 1988 until her retirement in December of 1994. She was the former organist for Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home, Inc. of Waynesburg for several years.

Her husband, Carl Irwin Johnston, whom she married September 24, 1946, died September 27, 2002.

Surviving are two daughters, Carlotta (Clyde David “Butch”) Whyte and Linda (Joseph) Olczak, all of Waynesburg; six grandchildren, Christy (Corbly) Orndorff, Cliff D. Whyte, Craig D. (Loretta) Whyte, Kathryn O. (Micah) Lowell, Jennifer (Tad) Dalton and Ashley O. (Dan) Horbachewski; 10 great-grandchildren, Cassandra (Kyle) Lamb, Caitlin (Marlin) Morton, Emily Whyte, Colton Whyte, Martina Whyte, Carly Whyte, Anna Whyte, Natalie Lowell, Paxton Lowell, Jackson Horbachewski; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to her parents and husband, are one sister, Gayle Ilene Moore, who died in infancy; one brother, James E. Moore; one great-granddaughter, Morgan Whyte; and her stepmother, Erna Irene Six Moore.

At the request of the family, all visitation and services will be private, with Pastor Cynthia Deter officiating.

Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home, Inc., Daryl L. Throckmorton, owner/director, 197 N. Maiden Street, Waynesburg, PA 15370, has been entrusted with her arrangements. Private burial will be in the Garards Fort Cemetery, Garards Fort.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church, 112 North Richhill Street, Waynesburg, PA 15370, or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
